I am looking at adding a used W/B this season,I do not have much money to play with so I am looking at mowers under $2000.I found a Lesco 54",20hp kohler,I believe it is a hydro.,not sure though. It is on turfquip.com and it is in my areawhich is rare!It has 1144 on the clock though, but they are only asking $1495.Also there is a 1990 Toro wheelhorse 60" ZTR with new 24hp Onan engine with 250 on the clock, they are asking $2400. Both seem to look allright by the picture.Any advice on either mower would be helpful.----Mike

Im sure you are aware that the hour meter could have been disconected on that toro...Either which way I would look into both and see how well each runs...how often and what has been serviced.

Just my two cents and they dont mean much but that seems like a lot of hours. plus on the toro I thought onan went out of business.

This is obviously my opinion but Lesco= no dealer service, a mower that was bought from another company and painted and then sold to you and the mower really isn't that great to start with!!:o

I own a 52 Lesco wb w 17 Kawi belt drive. The 52 Hydro two adds

up looks better. Maybe an owner/operator vs larger co. Mine looks like that one except belt dr. Its about a 96 or 97. Made
by Lesco before MTD.

That Lesco has a great price on it.

The Toro is an antique. No parts what so ever. They got sued over that mower, and then inturn bought eXmark soon after.

Lesco=no dealer service?

But wait you can find parts for that thing at almost any mower dealer.

Perhaps in your area, but in our are, Lesco provides better service than any other supplier.

While we don't own any Lesco mowers, we do have a couple of other pieces of their equipment, and the parts and service from them is second to none. I guess it just depends on your area...?

I agree to thoughly check it out before you buy. Have you checked with your local dealers to see what they might have in your price range? The Lesco in our area sells mowers but doesn't service them there. If you need service they send it out. To me that would be very inconvienent. I like local sales and service. Good luck.

I would stay away from the Lesco. In our area, I was told by the Lesco dealer that they have a mechanic that floats between several stores. In my opinion, this could create a lot of down time.

mileklein--c4 could be right about the floater mechanic but you arent gonna be taking that machine back to lesco for service anyway! this wont be a warranty sale!

I don't have that machine but I do have the older 14 hp, 48 belt unit and I have had good service.

if you buy that 54 and something goes wrong you can buy motor parts anywhere that sells kohler. I have used some skag parts on mine.

as for pumps and hoses, I'll bet they are available elsewhere.

I keep an extra set of belts with me all summer and I have never broke down and not been able to get back going.

the day that I pulled the starter rope out of the motor was a good one though.

it started as it broke so I left it running the rest of the day! kinda dumb looking pulling up to a light with a trailered mower running but hey--I got done that day and fixed it that night!

"Spend a little more and get a ztr". That should state "an arm and a leg more". We are talking about a 1500 dollar hydro, here for pete's sake. The guy said he wanted to spend less than two grand! At this price it is a steal. If it were closer to me I WOULD BUY IT. I don't know if you want it as a backup , or as a main mower if you are just starting out, but it should serve either purpose at 1500 bucks. I would have a shop give it a once-over to make sure it checks out, but would not hesitate to buy another Lesco walk. I've had great service from mine. Good luck!

P.S: I would be scared to death of ANY ZTR selling for 2400 bucks. There's a REASON why it is going so cheap. I would avoid that one like the plague.

The Lesco here in greensboro has a mechanic that works there all day 4 days a week and is ecellent. I take all my small equipment to him lesco brand or not. The mowers are nice i have demoed them but i am loyal to JD.

yyaaawwnnn, ssstrechhhh, coughhhh

who said $2400 for a ztr?

there are alot of nice used ztr's in the $3k-$4k range that will produce more than any w/b.

your not that far, step up to the plate and buy it.

You were too busy firing off a kneejerk-reaction of a post to know what is going on, here. The guy was asking for simple advice and clearly stated that he did NOT have a lot of money to play with. As a matter of fact, he stated that he was looking for a mower around 2 thousand dollars. He gave TWO CHOICES which he was considering: one was a hydro walk for 1500 dollars, the other was a ZTR for 2400. The elementary fact here, is that the guy clearly states there is no extra money available to buy a ztr. I believe the guy is trying to start in the biz and a walk behind will let him get started and make a profit with low overhead.

P.S. Do you pay for that big flashing link that you use as your signature? If you are such a bigshot why don't you support this site by purchasing a banner ad at the top? Cheaper to leach, isn't it?

Ummm did I miss something, he was looking at a ztr also and Mr.Captdevo (a sponsor here) was making a suggestion.

I think some one needs to give you some laxative lakegastonla, you sound constipated.

Just read the original post. He didn't ask for suggestions that would cost 1-1/2 to two times his budget. He said he had two grand to work with. Instead of suggesting that he overextend himself for a ztr, why not try to give useful advice? In fact, I'll bet that two thirds of us on this site started out with a walk behind mower, and still have one(or more) for a backup, trim mower, or whatever. It is a machine that can still be put to use when he IS ready to move to a ZTR. Contrary to popular belief(of some) , a walk behind mower can still be used to turn a tidy little profit. In smaller yards(8k square ft. or so) I can do a better job with a walk than with a ztr. Looks neater and easier to stripe around beds, etc and make it look like the stripe goes through the bed. Just my 2.432345 cents worth.

By the way Lawngodfather(??) Yes, the thread starter DID mention a ztr. A 2400 dollar machine at that. (what kind of service do you think he'd get from a ragged out 2400 dollar ztr?)As a matter of fact he clearly stated that he wanted to spend LESS than two thousand dollars. Did you actually READ the post or just skim through it? In short, the guy wanted an honest EDUCATED opinion and you and devo turned this into a childish pissing contest. The usefulness of this thread is gone and I hope he got SOMETHING out of it before it became a sad game of my dad can beat up your dad.

Since you are definately constipated, after you had skimmed through, go back and reread my first post to the thread.

If you don't like what is written here then go bang your head up against a wall, nobody want to read your non-imformitive argumentitive posts. If I'm not mistaken you better look in the mirror, you be the one making this a big deal.

Hang on I'll do it for you, This way you can't miss it again.

My suggestion to you is quit assuming. Make sure you have facts before you accuse. I can see them in plain black and white. Maby you can only see color and not B&W.
