My good ol caterpillers, these things have been through hell. The one on the right, where it is cut open, was from a chainsaw, ya, I sometimes wore sandals whiling using one, not no more! And notice the screws holding the sole on those screws are all around the boots. They keep your feet warm, sometimes to warm, and you feet sweat. Overall great boots.

Red Wing boots & shoes are all my feet have known since I was 16. I have each boot resoled as needed. With some TLC Red Wing leather uppers will last? dare I say forever; cause I cannot wear my uppers out.
Red Wing "WORX" are made in china for Red Wing, and cannot be resoled
All Red Wing boots are made in USA, and can be resoled for around $75.00 that includes a Vibram sole

i currently use the two pair of wovlerines a year. demolich the sole half year. i used to use the lawn grips for a few years but the soles are pathetically weak. other than that they were the best thing i have worn. i wrote them about my opinion but they said that was the best they coulddo. oh well. no more for me at like 119$ a pair. i used to use caterpillar boots and they were the toughest but very heavy.

I have worn Merill, Wolverine, Rocky, Timberland, etc. I buy high end Goretex only now. They usually last 6 months. About $200-$300/Year in boots. I have tried the Wal-Mart shoes and my feet said NO! Take care of your feet. Yeah it cost me alot but my feet are happy. I also wear good wool blend socks year round, and no, my feet don't get hot or sweaty. That's what the Goretex will do for you.

Holy crap! I'm going to agree with nosparkplugs for once.
Red Wings are great boots. I grew up in Red Wing MN and know many of the employees. Great company for the town. They have been in biz for 100 plus years now. They do have some boots made in china now but I think every company does that to do that to hit certain price points.
In the fall I got a new insulated set with the super sole 2 which is pretty comfortable. They cost $275 but worth every dollar.

My favorite boots are Vasque Boots (Sundowners) I've been buying them since 1978. They use to be made in Italy ($270 in 1978) now they're about $160, but made in China, and not nearly the same boot. I've tried several other brands, but I haven't found any I liked better.

I too will only use Red Wing. Damn expensive, but worth every penny. $289 for a pair. I bought 2 pairs for work. Switch off every other day. I get a full season out of them. Oil the leathers every month. They look like ch!t, but they wont quite. I have a third pair for around the house or if both pairs are wet. They are so stiff that they hurt. I need to start breaking them in. Red Wings Rule!

I wear Carolinas (logger boot) and my foremen liked them so that is what i buy them...I just got 2 years out of my last pair and they are still ok to wear. Tread is down on them now and they are no longer waterproof because the steel toe finally wore through. The only pair of boots i never had to "Break in". Tried to get the identical boot last week and they dont make that style anymore. Go figure.!
Chippewa - They cost about $100 a pair off of ebay. Really good boots. I have been wearing Chippewa boots for 30 yrs now. I wore the same pair for over 9 years once. Just kept sending them in every few years and Chippewa re-soled them.
Workboots? What kind of work? Answering the phone all day? Sitting on a Z/standing on a sulky most of the day? Or walking behind a WB, trimming/edging/sweeping all day long? I'm in the last group, fwiw, and enjoy the exercise.
Our feet are our foundation...and if you can get away with comfortably wearing/buying cheap workboots then you'll save some money.
Having tried "workboots" - I found that a more rugged hiker better suited my needs for traversing uneven terrains AND leaving my feet less fatigued at the end of a long day.
Features I want: COMFORT, traction on hills/slopes, water resistant, durability, heat tolerance.
GoreTex XCR (eXtreme Comfort Range) is a fabric that adds water resistance while better coping with heat dissipation - making for a cooler experience in the Summer months.

These Vasque's (owned by Red Wing) have proven to be the best all around workboot so far for me. I've tried Hi-Tec, Ecco, Red Wing, Wolverine, quite a few cheapies as well. Find what shoes/boots work well for you and your feet...cuz everything above your foundation (ankles on up to hat!) may very well depend on them to a greater degree than you may think/perceive.
If you want a workboot/hiker with a steel toe then check out Red Wing or Danner. Both make rugged hikers with a steel toe.

I bought a pair of survivor boots from walmart. On both boots there is absolutly no tread anymore. The bottom of the boots is a soft foam material. I'm actually wearing a pair of the survivor boots that my dad got about a year ago that don't fit him right so he doesn't wear them. They actually have real soles and are great. Except for they arn't steel toe. I had the back of the trailer come down on my right foot earlier..didn't feel too good. If I had the steel toe boots on I wouldn't have felt a thing.

For Guys who like tennis shoes....
These boots are light, and still give you toe protection and fully waterproof and breathable.
Also, there is a stiff plastic "shank" in the sole that prevents foreign objects from penetrating your sole.

Looks like im in the far minority here but I have a pair of lawngrips that I used last year and loved them. They are light and very comfortable. I wear LawnGrips. They are by far the most comfortable boot I have ever worn. I feel better knowing that there is a steel toe, and they are reasonably waterproof. I like the sole design; it gives me pretty good traction. The sole is somewhat soft/gummy like some of the Red Wings so they don't last forever, but the softness adds to the cushioning. They are very roomy in the toe area, so my toes don't feel like they need to be liberated at the end of the day. Not cheap, but well worth it.

I have tried a lot of brands and have been disappointed in just as many. I stick with Red wing or Hermans for work boots and a lightweight Timberland for kickin' around. My grandfather bought me a shoe kit back in the '70s and I still have the original horse hair brush from that kit. He taught me to take care of the leather in only way...good oil. Here's what he taught me.
- Warm the oven up to it's lowest setting
- Put your boots on a pan and stick them in the oven for 5 minutes
to let the pores open in the leather
- Pull the boots out and rub them down good and hard with mink oil
- Let them dry (pores close trapping oil) and then brush off excess with
horsehair brush
In the winter I use sno-seal which works pretty good too. Many of you may already know this but maybe it will help someone. Even with the waterproof liners of today the leather still needs to conditioned in order to last.

I've got a pair of Timberlands that I'm mostly happy with, but I've found that the soles get damaged easily if you stomp on a shovel. They're fine for mowing, but I'd guess someone who does a lot of shrub installation would probably wreck them in a few weeks.
I used to keep a revolving set of old sneakers for working in wet ground, since a revolving set of boots would have eaten up my whole paycheck. I'd wear my boots whenever they were dry enough, which would sometimes be every second or third day.

Summer: Merrell shoes only!
Fall and estimates/meetings: uninsulated redwings
Winter and Spring: Carolina 8" loggers no steel toe 600 gram thinsulate 4x4's
These are the ultimate boot. Lightweight, Rugged Impact Resistant Sole, Gor-tex (Breathable & waterproof for the dewy grass in the morning), Excellent Traction and NO LACES. The only disadvantage is string trimming with shorts on, they fill up with debris. However, I service with pants all the time and they work awesome!!! They are $99!

Last year i went through 2 pair of Brahmas and a pair of timberlands so i decided to see what the Red Wing hype was all about and today was my first full day wearing them. Needless to say these boots are well worth every penny and im glad that i will be wearing American made products from here on out!!

I have been using Merrell Chameleon Stretch II. Not waterproof at all but they breath really well and dry fast. The thing I like is they have a neoprene sock instead of a tongue that keeps almost all of the grass and stuff out of your shoes. Not for use when cutting wood etc., but I like them for cutting grass. Light, comfortable and supportive.
