OK, I have been doing lawncare for about 3 years now and am graduating this year and would like to go full time. What types of insurance do I need to cover everything? I do have a friend who helps sometimes.:waving:

you need general liability (GL) and workman's comp (WC)

Don't you only need workmans comp if you have employee's? I have general liability of 1mil and 15k equipment coverage.

I think you can get LLC.

It all depends on the gross income! If you make alot of money you want to be an LLC. If not hide where you can, bottom line, cover you arse and get liabilty and workmans comp!

Go to your state and find out what the actual requirements are. There might be rules and regs stating the minimum amounts of insurance that are required. Whether it be workman's comp, commercial auto, and/or general liability.

Do yourself a favor and speak with a few different insurance agency's that have the ability to obtain coverages through different insurance companys. They (for free) will be willing to sit down with you and go over some coverages they could provide for you as well as there costs.

You need to decide for yourself what coverages you need for what risks you are placing out there. Do you have enough insurance that in the event of an accident the insurance will cover the costs. If the insurance doesn't cover the costs more than likely they will then come afte your business assets. After that your personal. With that said, you should speak with an attorney to decide what is the best 'type' of business for you...whether it be LLC, corporation, sole proprietor. Despite what was just said its not just base on whether or not you make a lot of money. there is more to it than that.

MY advice is to start calling insurance agents or asking people on this site in your area who the recomend. Start calling and speaking with them. you'll have questions and ideas popping into your head..ask here and the agent.

What do you reccomend. I'm not trying to find out the bare minimum. I would like to get something pretty good.

Also any companies you suggest. Either nationwide or in my area of South Louisiana.

I use Nationwide for both personal and commercial. I have 1/2 million general liability for right around $50 a month.

My company is an LLC which will help stop people from going after my personal assets. Notice I said "help" in the previous sentence.

I have GL coverage for 1mill per occurence and 3 mil aggregate. I have commercial auto with comp & collison on two trucks and three trailers and just comp coverage on a 4th trailer. They are for 1mil coverage as well. Added to my GL policy are two riders...one for slip and fall coverage and one for pesticide/chemical coverage. These hold the same limits as above. My auto coverage has other driver coverage. We also have inland marine coverage for over 50k worth of equipment for replacement values that I specify and I'm in the middle of adding more equipment for this spring. We pay about 9 grand total....2300 for the one truck/all trailers, another 2k for for the second truck (different policy). The chemical rider is around 500 and the slip/fall rider is around 850. My GL policy is somewhere in the 4k range...difficult b/c grouped into that is the inland marine coverage.

Oh ya, I'm speaking with ins. agent now to add an umbrella policy to my coverage which would be over and above current coverages. Anywhere from 1k to 3k per year depending on coverage amount (1MIL to 5MIL)

And yes,...workmans comp is required in this case. As stated, if friend is helping, he is an employee, and has liability.

I called Nationwide and they told me they don't insure Louisiana.

UPDATE:

I called a local agent and they said for general liability it would be about 700.00 a year for 1 million dollars of coverage.
