I bought a brown bed edger today and im having some issues with it and hopefully someone can help. It starts right up but doesnt seem like it is running wide open and when i pull the lever to engage the blades is shuts off. Any ideas what it might be?

are you picking the blades up before you engage them to get them going or leaving it sit on the ground and squeezing the handle?

Im picking it up but im wondering if its underpowered and not able to turn the pulley to engage the blades?

You didn't specify that it was a new or used unit. If its new take it back to your dealer to get it checked out. If its used make sure the rotor and idler turn freely. Most of the Browns that I have worked on had Honda 5 or 7HP engines as I recall. If the compression is OK, I would do a thorough carb cleanup and give it another try. The fuel nozzle in the carb has about 12 small holes that tend to varnish up and thereby limit fuel flow. I'm not saying that's your only problem but thats probably where I'd start. If the engine has a low oil sensor, make sure the oil level is proper although this is not likely your problem since it is dying as you engage.

These machines are fantastic, they are able to cut through concrete (been there done that) so there is no way that it is underpowered. First, ensure that it has adequate oil, Honda pro usually have a low oil sensor, then make sure your gas it good, do you have a fuel filter, probably in liner if you do, make sure it is;t clogged, about $#.00 to replace, then if all is good to this point, let it warm up to make sure the choke is fully open, lift the front off the ground and engage the clutch, give it time to get spinning full rpm, then slowly lower it into the soil, you can not start these directly on what you want to cut through. If this doesn;t solve the issue, easy enough to find a local dealer that handles Honda or the Brown Units for that matter, I would imagine that the dealer you buy your other equipment through would handle either one or both. Should be nothing more than a simple tune up. As I said, these machines are amazing, I am on my 2nd 991 and am amazed at what it will do each time I use it. Once you get her taken care of, she will provide you many years of service and enable you to do work that would take hours and hours in minutes. Good luck

You are very welcome, glad that it worked out. Like I mentioned, these machines are really awesome. You are going to love it once you get used to it. Do yourself a favor and mark out where the blade hits on your housing, that way you are sure to hit your lines exactly.
