View Full Version : Re-seeding shady areas?

Late Summer (Sept) is traditionally the best time for reseeding...but what if the areas you wish to re-seed are shady areas? The re-seeded areas would get very little sunlight.

Would Spring (Mar/Apr) be a better bet as there would be more sunlight available until the tree's leaf out?
Am thinking the grass would get a better headstart...

Right, thinning the trees is an important element here...

make sure you use the right kind of grass.... in michigan we use like a tall fescue for shady areas

If the area gets very little light, even a shade mix of seed may not work. I usually tell customers to do something else with the area. If it's under a tree with very little sunlight, I suggest mulching around the tree.

I used to have a customer that wanted a very shady area to be lawn. I used to seed it 3 times per year. It would grow for a while, then die. But it looked like lawn most of the time.

never found ANY effective way to produce grass under a large tree. usually comes up... then goes back down lol
