When is a good time to put this down? Last year I waited too long and had to fight weeds with a Post emergent. That wasn't fun. This year I'm going to try and limited the weeds beforehand.

Put it down right before the next good chance of rain that you have unless you want to water it in. It is always better to do it sooner rather than later. Pre-emerge is worthless if you wait too late.

Crabgrass control will not do much for broadleaf weeds. I am from Michigan.
We try to get our crabgrass control down before the air temps hit 80 degrees.

Put another way--try to get your pre-em down before average last spring frost for your city. Frost kills crabgrass. Start in advance so that you will have time to complete all jobs. If you have 3 weeks of work--start 3 weeks ahead of time.

So, in Huntsville, you have to have your pre-emergent completed by about March 30.

But local advice is better. Ask your fert dealer--ask more than one to be sure.
