judging from what i see on other crews, women make up a fair percentage of the lawn care workforce.
seems to me that more often than not they hold key positions.
of course some own their own buisiness.

Do any of you have women on your mowing crews? Are there any women on this site that own an LCO? I have worked for a woman once. My friend Summer is now my book keeper, but that's it. I'm just wondering if any of you have any women woring for you? They are good workers, and Summer is good when she has worked with us blowing some of the driveways off with me.

Edited by LGF. How did I do?

Yes the Mrs. will work better than almost all my employees and run them into the ground.

There are a few threads on this in the arcives.

Thanks for the editing. Now that I can understand it I feel strangely compelled to reply.

Yes, I do have women in my crew. Namely me, but I also would not hesitate to hire another qualified "gal" if one applied. Sorry guys, but I really feel that we take a little more time double checking properties to be sure things look good; and we're more likely to see areas that need to be cleanup up then yous do. I bought this company from another woman & her and I worked together mowing for 1-1/2 years. All of our customers were extremely happy (with our work... no we didnt wear bikini tops or anything!).

The hardest part for me now on the crew is the heavy work. I'm not real big or strong, so I do rely on one of the guys to mucsle the equipement off the trailer, or to mow the slopes with the walkbehind. Hate depending on the crews for that, but short of becoming more muscular, wich i dont want, what can a girl do?

Tammie,
Thats good to hear. I have my wife working with me and I also have 3 daughters. The 2 older ones 12 and 11 have helped me with mulch jobs in the past and my little one 6 is interested also.
I think when they start working I will have to call it Harem Lawncare and dress everyone in pink.:D

Sorry sista, but I really feel that this statement is false. I think that "yous" take a little more time 'cause "yous" may be a little slower.. is all :)

On a serious note.. I worked with a woman once in this biz. She was very fast and good with a line trimmer. The only problem was that she was nice looking and was a distraction. She was the boss's girlfriend. I had to quit before I got myself in trouble :D

I once knew an all Woman lawn service in Ga. that had 4 women that ran everything. Most of them were stronger than me and a couple had deeper voices than me too! Anyway they all broke up (The Company I mean) and went there separate ways. I also remember one day that one of them was doing something to her mower and she stuck her hand under the deck while the blades where engaged. BRAIN FART!!! Also a good point to keep the safety cut offs in operation. She had surgery and now the is able to use her hand! I just want to go on the record saying that I know this woman till this day. She is a very nice person and I hated to hear she had gotten hurt. Im sure others have been seriously injuried like this also.

Just a note. TURN YOUR DARNED MOWERS OFF BEFORE STICKING YOUR HAND UNDER IT!!!

Not!!! I don't think so!!! Women have a maticulas nature to clean, not to landscape. Landscaping is an aquired ART not a sexas act.

My apologies everyone, if my 1st post came across as slam. It was not intended. The last thing I would want to do is offend "yous". I've learned more from from this site & all of your expertise in the last few weeks about the industry then I could ever have imagined. Many thanks for this!

My point simply was that between myself & the other girls I've worked with, it seemed we were more likely to notice the paper on the other side of the lawn then the guys would. Maybe it is our cleaning nature. On the other hand, most of us girls are not as strong as the guys. So there are pluses and minuses.

Hows that for backtracking?

It's true. Lawn care and landscaping is an aquried art. I know guys who can't do it.

Atleast the women I have to work for should stick to cleaning not landscaping, they wouldn't know a blade of grass from a bush.

I have had women working for me in the past, and would hire a woman again in a heartbeat. Women will work harder and better than men at least 75% of the time, while still paying better attention to detail than a man would. I have had men work for me (under the women) who would not come back the next day due to the fact that the women were so hard on them.

OR, did u let the blonde girls do the math???my wife and i have an agreement: i wont try to give birth, and she wont try to do heavy physical labor. unfortunately this line of work is very physically demanding, i cant imagine having to load and unload the equipment or lift a barrel of grass for someone who im paying to do this work. i actually was gonna open an all female lawn service, the girls would be required to cut in bathing suit tops and white shorts, i was gonna call it "weed wacking women". but, after more serious consideration, i decided that ralph cramden had a few ideas more likely to succeed. like maybe the "no cal pizza idea"? we all have our place.

This is a funny thread.

Hey Parkwest! According to the definition of Sexist that you posted, I am such. I think there is a difference between men and women and I thank God for it. ;)

Now about the twins. I always wanted twins. I think every man dreams of them. Just my rotten luck, I got my wish. They turned three in October...:D

I am a pretty lucky guy really, I just dread the thought of what it will be like when they start wanting to date. I think when the first one asks me, I will ask her, "Are you married yet?". When she replies no I will say, "Then you can't go out on a date." Was that as funny as I wanted it to be? I won't quit my day job, oh wait, I don't have a day job.

I think this is a really funny thread! We get use to working around the guys and usually keep up with the best of the smart comments. Ive come to expect a certain amount of heckeling and joking. We dont sit around and talk about guy stuff so to break the ice and start some conversation we usually make fun of eachother!! Example...I tell them that if they had a womans eye they wont miss a certain spot while weedeating. They tell me that one of these days a car is going to wreck while driving by and staring at me on my mower and then they will take me to court and make me pay for them wrecking their car!! Its all in fun and keps things from being really boring!

Ive had both male and female employees and not a whole lot of difference. It's all in their attitude and ambition - if someone wants to do a good job be it male or female they will. With riders and sulkys nowadays it evens up the strength needed so that is not really an issue. Train your employees properly the first time and enjoy having productive workers.

Yes, it is a male dominated business, but the women can hack it just like the men. i have hired guys that cant cut worth **** (really, how hard is it to drive a straight line, ive even had one guy drill a car with a walk behind). I have a gal that works part time with me. She does all the weeding, most of the trimming, and edging. She is also a licenced applicator. She has worked Lawn care for about 4 years now. She is a hard worker and I am glad to have her. I have worked with many women in the last 11 years and most of them have been great. I would have to admit she is atractive but I have much better at home (my wife) so there is no problems having a strict professional relationship with a women employee. Anyway with todays laws if you do hire a women you had better be careful. Keep work separate from personal life and you will be fine.

In over 40 years of working in many aspects of the service industry, it is my observation that if you want most any job done well, and you provide proper training, your best investment is hiring female workers. They are more attentive to detail, strive to complete the job properly, and don't try to take shortcuts that reduce quality.

Now I can't give any great input on my own in the lawn maintenance industry, except that all the guys I had working in the past could only do 82% to 96% of the production my wife did when she worked with me. And most of the guys were half my wife's age when she was working.

As a third person, I have heard from large operators from all over the country that a female crew will out produce, and get much fewer customer complaints, than any male crew. In discussions of this at national and state conferences over the last 12 years, I have never heard anyone contradict this idea. Note that these were female crews vs. male crews; the intelligent operators usually don't mix the sexes on crews, if at all possible.

And an apology to the women on this board, for all the macho emptyheads who made their comments above. I noticed that they were all emotional conjecture. No one gave an example of a bad experience with a female employee as a worker.

I'm a woman, and I'm out there working on the crew. My husband and I own the business and we do all the work together. He mows and I trim and blow off walks. I do all advertising, billing and bookwork. On days when he isn't available to mow, I do it by myself. I do all the bidding on jobs. I handle all customer relations.

During the winter, if there's no plowing, we do construction work together.

Hey Ladies, glad to know I'm not alone out there!

Maple City -- I do all the bidding also because my husband tends to bid too low and get us into trouble. My bids are more realistic. My husband usually gives me looks when I come back from talking with potential customer with the quote sheet. Then, when they hire us and we start the work, he says, "You know, honey, it was worth the $$$$!" He does all the invoicing and bookwork. I do all the scheduling. We both share mowing and weedeating. He does the edging (but I'll do if it needed) and we both blow off sidewalks. etc... I've been out there by myself too when he was in the hospital. Our customers come out there and can't BELIEVE that I can do it by myself. It is FUNNY!

You are right -- We've come a long way!!!

I'm still trying to figure out what "bouble mint" meant:confused:

Women have their place, I think George Jefferson said it best.....the kitchen and the bedroom!

I'm kidding;) , my wife helps me everyday, day in and day out. She mows and edges and I do all the trimming. She operates the blower (note how I worded that) too. Without her I would be 50%. We get along fine and although we're not doin' 100 yards a week, we get by...........and do it without jail bird help. I can't say she really loves the work, there are good days and bad days. I can say she loves me and that's why she helps out. One day soon I hope the competition around here wises up and starts raising the prices so I can let her get back to "her world", one that she really enjoys. Until then we'll continue working together and eating out............the kitchen thing just don't happen that much when she works all day:(

I have 2 daughters.............they don't like to get their fingernails dirty:rolleyes: so they haven't been a lot of help.

I do have a 10 year old son too..........it's getting time for him to learn some work ethics:D

My wife has been a gem for my business.
It started out that she would just help when i got behind.
Then i had to teach her all the aspects of the business
so she could run it while i'm out due to back surgery.
At first she was faced with uncertainty from the customers
about perfoming all the tasks involved, but she has
performed greatly. At first she was a little slow, i imagine
most people are at first, but now her times are rivaling
mine and by the time i recover i fill she may eclipse my
times. In which case i may have to have her train me.

Our daughter can mow and weed-eat as quickly as any guy. The funny thing is when she recruits one of her guy friends to come and work. They rarely last long. Their egos can't take it. They don't want to (or can't) work as hard as she does. The other funny thing is when other LCO's trucks go by the site where she is mowing -----again and again and again. Hmmm, must be envious.:D

My future wife works side by side with me every day. Wow Can she use a string trimmer, yes she is a little slower than me, but she is much much more consistent in her quality. The clients really like the work she does, and isnt that all that matters what the clienst think.
