I have a toro 36" gear drive fixed deck 13hp Kohler walkbehind that I decided to replace the motor on. I know they don't make the 13 HP kohler so I have to put a 15 on . Can anyone walk me through the procedure to make sure I order the correct motor and the procedure for removing the old one. Do I need a puller to get the drive pulley off the vertical shaft of the old motor? j-thomas has 3 engine choices http://j-thomas.com/Catalog/181_kohler_vertical_engines.html toro model 30194 thanks for any help!

yes I'm sure if I call they can vs online ordering. my 48 " toro w/b has a 15 Hp kohler 41542 so I can imagine it is the same. Looks like 4 bolts and take off the throttle cable and fuel line.

Jeffex,

The first thing you need to do is measure the crankshaft diameter and length on your old engine, measure from the bottom/flat surface of the mounting flange to the end of the crank.

If you have a manual pto that would eliminate the engine with the charging system. Maybe one of the other two has a integrated throttle/choke control (only requires one cable) and the other separate throttle and choke controls.

As for the pulley, Some will slide right off and others require a puller. Best start soaking it now with a good quality penetrating oil.

Remove control cable(s)/fuel line/electrical wires/belts and the four mounting bolts then lift the engine off, There really isn't that much to this engine swap.

Good Luck

I dont think that is a manual PTO. I dont ever remember a Toro walk behind with a manual PTO.

restrorob..what is the knack to getting the pulleys off the verticle shaft on the motor? I backed out the 2 set screws. do they have to come off all the way? Hard to get leverage to pry to pulley off. looks like one hex set screw for tranny pulley. I need shaft measurement to order new motor as the model number of my Kohler 13 hp is worn off

Depending on how big the hole in the deck is you might wanna pull the engine/pulleys off and then you can have better access to them on a bench.

You may also want to pull the set screws all the way out because sometimes they use doubles...the 2nd one locks the inner one from moving.

Jeff,

Remove the set screws completely, Then spray penetrating oil in the holes and let soak a little.

Use a larger flat tipped drift punch and tap the side of the trans pulley collar going all the way around EXCEPT where the set screw threads are. The shock from tapping helps loosen the pulley in some cases, They try pulling downward on the pulley while tapping on the collar. Spay/soak and repeat tapping the side until it slides off.

Worse case, You remove the top case half then remove the retaining ring holding the pinion gear to the shaft and slide pulley shaft and all out of the bottom.

Try the above procedure on the engine pulleys as well, I have ran across a few stuck crank pulleys. The engine was removable with the pulleys in place so I drained the oil and flipped the engine up side down, Had a co worker grab the pulley on each side and raise the engine just off the floor (put a piece of cardboard on the floor). Then held a brass mallet on the end of the crank and smacked it with a BFH, That works in some cases.

Yeah, People say use a puller !!! Well, You have a 50/50 chance of busting a cast pulley and bending a stamped steel pulley. A puller is a last resort, If that breaks or bends a pulley bust out the fire wrench and burn it off. Then replace the crankshaft seal.

Good Luck

The blade pulley is larger than the hole in the engine deck so it must come off to pull the motor. I'll try fully removing the set screws for that pulley. I fugure I'll need to get a pry bar on it to break it loose some how. The tranny pulley will go through the engine hole.

My toro 48" I just sold had a Kohler 15hp cv15T-41542 on it so I just pulled the trigger on that order from J-Thomas for $705 from some of the photos I could find the 41582 showed a different filter configuration. This is an older model with no electric clutch and I needed a new tranny belt from j-thomas as well as some edger blades so I combined to save on shipping. Thanks again for your help. I had to take off the motor mount bolts and lay it over to get a crow bar on the edge of the belt pulley and hit it with the BFH. Spray and repeat for almost an hour . Now the challenge is to get the tranney pulley off! its soaking in penetrating oil and the motor is on the garage floor with cardboard undernieth

The numbers I know work are 41624, 41629, 41582
But I see you got it :p

By the way...
I bought a tool years ago, this thing is the most universal thing I have, no other tool is as versatile except maybe Vise grips lol,
and I have tried every other kind of horse puller they make, not even pitman arm pullers or steering wheel pullers or bearing pullers,
I have them all but I almost never use those because nothing beats this multi-configuration super Universal puller tool...

This is it, I found it, this is exactly the one I have, not sure if you'd have to mail-order it but some of best $ I ever spent:
http://www.wttool.com/product-exec/product_id/4760
I have pulled steering wheels, control arms, that very pulley you had to get off, and countless other things with that tool.
That thing RAWKS!

Topsites...I could have used one of those! 41542 was the perfect fit. Easy install except next time I'll know to put the oil drain plumbing on BEFORE i bolt it to the deck. I had to loosten the 4 bolts and lift it up an 1" to screw in elbow to oil drain plug so it would drain through hole in deck. No biggie! just over a $1,000 for 4 new itres, tranny pulley, tranny belt, spindle bearings, 15HP kohler, paint , and shipping. I'm going to buy a new 36" TORO or Quick 36" this year any way but now I have a fresh rebuild to start the season and keep as a backup and use for leaf grinding in the fall.
