Vallen Safety Co's. Olympic style, tortoise frame, amber lens, with a +1.50 bifocal built in, red frogger lanyard. Hey, I'm gettin old and I hate flippin from readers to sunglasses. These are ANSI Z87.2 approved with a built in bifocal for only $12 bucks. Why do I wear them? #1, I can't play a musical instrument. #2, the guys that write the checks require them

Actual safety glasses. I have three different pairs. Tinted, Smoked, and Clear.
I have had more stuff fly at my from underneath my glasses than directly at so I just feel like actual safety glasses are better at wrapping around my face and protecting from the sides and below.
Granted the bigger stuff like mulch or rocks do come straight at me.
Anyone taken a rock to the nose or lip? Either that or a rock to your white knuckles on a trimmer...that'll almost bring me to my knees.

Anyone have any good suggestions for over-the-glasses safety glasses? I tried to get by without safety glasses, but I catch too much stuff under my frames. I use some from Lowes (tourguard) but just wondering if some of you guys have other recommendations.
Thanks

Last summer I finally realized that I didn't need to be wearing my precription glasses. I can see fine! But after years of having them as protection (somewhat) I knew I needed something over my eyes.
I ended up getting the "OCC" saftey glasses from Lowes. I have 2 pair of the red tinted ones, no they don't make everything look red... They are $30 but I like them because unlike cheapo saftey glasses these can be adjusted to fit properly. I also keep a couple pair of the bluish/clear ones handy for mowing on cloudy dark days, and also for working in the shop.

I've tried cheapos and expensive safety glasses and realized I tear them up all the same. I go through a pair once a month, after a while they just get pitted and scratched badly.
I've split my lips more than a couple of times, and I love taking a rocks in the legs, nothing like doubling over in pain for a couple of minutes on a job site.

I get my safety glasses from ACME Electric. Each of my employees gets a pair of smoked and clear lens when they start. They are the wrap around type so they do protect quite well. They only cost $6.00 a pair. I don't take any chances with eyes.

I wear my oakleys as well. #1 they look good. #2 they are comfortable. #3They have great eye protection.#4 They have a great replacement policy, if anything breaks just send them in.
Anyone who does not wear them you have to be an idiot. I was one of those guys who never wore them until i had a pebble going probably aroun 50mph right into the centre of my eye. I droped to the ground in the worst pain ever. Iwas luckly near my house so i didnt even finish the yard and just walked home. an hour later i went back and finished the yard and then was done for the day. Anyways a pebble in the eye will ruin your day.

I'd wear over-the-glass safety glasses but I haven't found a pair I reguarly want to wear. That's the key, USING them. I've got a couple pair, but they don't seem to make it to the ZTR with me. I'm still looking for the pair that fits good enough to want to wear.

I have used these side shields before and they're not bad. You do need prescription safety glass lenses to be completely covered however.

I wear safety glasses, and provide all my workers with them. I buy my safety glasses from www.safetyglassesusa.com in quantities of 24 or greater. The ones that I currently use are:
Elvex TNT Gray Lens Safety Glasses
The TNT from Elvex is a low cost safety glasses that does not compromise style or comfort.
Features:
The new TNT from Elvex features a one piece lens-frame design.
Straight back cushioned temple arms provide a comfortable fit for extended wear.
Hard Coated polycarbonate lens.
99.9% UV protection.
Lens Color: Gray - Provides protection from glare and high levels of visible light and ultraviolet radiation without distorting color perception.
Compliance: ANSI Z87.1-2003 certified.
Cost less than $4.00 each. They are comfortable, and if they get scratched, I discard them and grab another pair.

Great post! Everyone should wear safety glasses because you only have 2 eyes. I'm all for safety for stuff like that, and even have a couple of pairs smoke and clear, but I usually don't wear them, only because when I sweat and start dripping, they are a real pain. Not to mention the fog. I get so frustrated, I usually go without. Last weekend I got some crap in the eye while weed whackin'... So, it put an emphasis back on me to get something that works, even if I have to pay some real bucks. I just spent the last hour looking at all the safety glasses on a site mentioned a couple times in this thread. So, question I have for everyone is regarding the sweat and fog, is there anything that works? The expensive Oakleys or the cheapos? I'm a Stihl guy myself and like to hear they are popular. Must check them out, but, will they work for sweat and fog?

I definately wear safety glasses. My dealer always has a few nicer ones for sale for around $10. ECHO and Stihl ones are actually pretty nice and are both around $10. I don't wear the expensive ones because I always eventually end up either losing them or breaking them.

You guys that have replied to this thread and are using sunglasses or a pair of blue blockers are nuts. Think about it. How much would you spend to replace your eyes. That's right, you can't. Get a pair of approved, safety impact glasses and wear em. If you weed whacker can throw a piece of debris at your eye at about 60MPH or more, what do think will give?
I prefer a more coverage and in three years I can easily say they saved my eyes a hundred times. They give me everything I'm looking for. Great field of view, they slip over my peltors and they are vented. I go through about two pair a year and they are well worth the money, which really isn't that much.http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/414JV2u0zrL._SL500_AA280_.jpg
Go to amazon.com and get 4 pair. Keep a pair in a baggy in your ditty bag in the truck. They clean-up with soap and water real well or even the armor all clean-wipes. Sunglasses don't keep out the dust and the side debris, these do. Are they hot in the summer? I've worn them in 95 deg heat for over an hour at a time and they are fine. I use the clear ones in the fall and the smoke ones the rest of the time.
I wear the Stihl safety glasses as they have a big area of coverage/protection...they are UV resistant as well...not to mention they are Free with a Stihl pruchase. And yes...wear approved/certified safety glasses...my brother is 100% blind in one eye due to a rock flying out from an edger and hitting him in the eye from 30ft away.

I have a pair of oakleys that I use. They really can take some crazy abuse, look around on youtube and check it out. Further, I also use the frames with a different lens sets to row in, so they are the sport type, big full coverage type deal. They are also one of very few styles that our government has decided to provide to the military. The way I see it if the govt says it can protect soldiers from explosion shrapnel, anything I can throw at it is a piece of cake.
Not only that but the interchangeable lenses are so nice, and the optics and quality, though pricey are well worth it. I have lenses in a black polarized, hivis persimmon/amber, and clear in flakjacket frames and I love them! look around on ebay for some deals...

I like the stihl timbersports great side coverage, which is most important when mowing. These glasses have taken debri thrown from the mower deflected off a tree then into my head, I will not leave home without them. The only draw back is that my dealer is usually out becase they are a hot item.
