Hey guy's
I have a Kaw fb460v that wants to stall under load. If the motor is really hot then I dont have a problem. But when it is cold or warm it wants to stall under load. I really notice it when the blades are running and I start into grass. Any ideas??
Thanks

Hi, just a couple of suggestions.
First make sure it's the engine that's the problem. Are the blades turning freely by hand (engine off when checking:)) Might be seized spindles or belts.
If that's all free then suspect slight restriction of the main jet. Only getting enough fuel to run with no load. Or, if they're adjustable, the valve gap.
Could be ignition, but not the first suspect.
Let us know what it's fitted to.
Good luck, Phil

Thanks Phil,
The blades and belts are loose. Would the main jet act different after heating up? Also, the small (coat hanger sized) rod on the side of the engine seems to move when this happens. It is tied to the carb and has a semi V in it. Could this be adjusted?

Hi Sturob, seems like the engine is 'hunting', slight up and down of the revs. Usually a sign of a weak mixture.
If I were you I'd drop the carb and give it a good clean out. Only takes a speck of crud to alter the mixture. Use an airline or carb cleaner.
Yes, a hot engine will perform different to a cold/warm engine
Good luck, Phil:usflag:

I had the same problem years back but mine would still take a load with choke partially closed. That was another sign for me that there was a piece of dirt getting in the jet. Simple remove and clean solved the problem. I did it on many machines over the years but I havent had the success with weedwackers. Dont know why I cant seem to clean them out right or something. Good luck its an easy fix.

Thanks for the advise.
Just had another thought.
It's worth checking the inlett manifold gaskets. Carb to manifold and manifold to block.
Did yer clean the carb?
Good luck, Phil

You helped me thru this thing not starting a few weeks ago and at that time I did clean the carb. The spark plug was the starting problem. Last year I was messing around with the wire/rod that goes from the cable to the carb to get it to idle right and ever since it has not performed under load. This link has a v/u bent in it and I opened it up a little with a pair of pliers. I think this is the problem but I'm not sure what to adjust it to. Does this make any since?

Hello Sturob,
Hope Phil doesn't mind ?
I follow what you are saying about this "choke link" rod with the "V".
When you spread this "V" open you made the choke butterfly in the carb start applying the choke before your throttle control hits the fast detent area. So, You may be trying operate this unit with the choke partially closed, This can cause a rich run/lack of power/hunt issue.
The fix is to move your throttle control handle to the fast detent position just before choke position. Remove the air filter and either look down inside the air intake or stick your finger down in there and see if the choke butterfly is fully open. If it isn't take your trusty pliers and crimp this "V" back closed only enough to open this choke butterfly fully, Then test run the engine.
Since this unit may have been ran on a partly closed choke re-check your spark plug for black soot, If it's fouled replace it.
Good Luck

Just seen Rob's post, follow his wise words. Been a L-O-N-G time since I've seen one of these engines
Ah yes I remember, your late trip to Walmart.
Repeating my advise, first get your can of beer. Life looks easier after a cold beer.(Or warm beer in the UK)
I can't help but think you've still got a carb problem. If you look at Rob's post #5 on this link you will see items # 25, 29 & 26 that make up the main jet fuel flow. Most carbs follow this style. Thanks for posting this diagram Rob:ukflag:

These are the items that need thorough cleaning. You may have some contamination that looks like varnish on these items. Also check the manifold gaskets, there could be an air leak coming from one of these.
The V shape rod you refer to, is one end connected to the throttle butterfly shaft? If it's moving back and forward it's usually a sign of weak mixture.
Hold back on the gallon of gas and the Zippo lighter for a while:laugh:
Good luck, Phil

Phil G. , Rob,
Thanks for the help. I will try what Rob suggested in the morning. As for what Phil has suggested, (beer) I'm trying that as I type! Like I said before, this problem started last year and when I tried to start it this year it would not start do to the plug. (Which Phil helped me with) This might explain the black fouling. I hope that I can adjust that rod in the morning and make this go away. This is an old mower but I'm trying to get a few more years out of it before I have to take the gas and a zippo to it!
