I'd give him $4,000, at most. There are many deals on older Bobcats right now, even the newer stuff is cheap. I've found multiple S185's with 1,600 hours for around $9,000. Those 743's are decent machines, but at $5,500 you could drop another $3K and have a much newer machine with a lot less hours.

What do you mean where do I get my information from? I will admit the 743 is a good machine, I'm not a Bobcat fan, but I've never heard any complaints from anyone about them and they hold their value well, must be worth a damn. Prices on iron I've found are straight up, I shop daily.
3500$ done ,one of the best bobcat ever made, very reliable but also very old, changing hoses on those loader arms sucks by the way.

Decent = good in my book, I never said it wasn't good. I guess I don't know what you're trying to get at. I talk to a lot of people outside here about equipment, if you think I base all my opinions off of what I read on here, you are sadly mistaken. I've been around equipment and kicking dirt with guys since I was 13, I've come across a lot of equipment that I had the chance to talk with people about.
i know man my first skid was a bcat 843 and i love that machine till this day,one of the best ever what happened!

I'll run anything once to get my own personal feel for a machine. However, 3-4 similar opinions about the same machine definately isn't a chance of fate. I think skid steers are really subjective though, one machine may have poor visibility for 10 guys, another 10 could say it's alright and works for them. Skid steers are strange like that. However, reliability is hard to argue against. I'm getting less brand loyal by the day, I still wave the Cat flag but we know Cat has it's failures here and there. I'm almost to the point on here with guys arguing about skid steers it's not even worth reading, like I said they're so subjective because they are used so many different ways that there really is no one good machine for everyone. When you start getting into the big iron, things are a little different. A D6 or 938 loader is used the same way it is anywhere else. You can start drawing performance conclusions real quick from verbal feedback.
thats true scag, but i can tell you around here people use loaders for grading roads and all kinds of weird stuff i have had both the cat and deere salesmen tell me that we just expect to much from these machines.

Yeah that's really true. That's why I stick to the bigger stuff for now to keep fueling my production dirt fix. If I get in a skid steer again I'll be going for broke, doesn't matter what brand it would be, I doubt it would keep me happy.
that's good scag I'm really happy for you,i just feel like a little skill makes all the difference in any machine and it wouldn't kill you mrsops to run something other than a skid for few days.

Ah there's downsides to my gig, I really hate not being in control of when I work. Running the big stuff the job is typically the same day in day out, can get boring if you let it, but I still have lots to learn so I keep it interesting. I just like trying new stuff, once I figure something out and have it completely licked, I'm bored and would prefer a new challenge. I really do miss self employment. Eventually I will weigh the options to see if going back to it would pan out, even if I made a little less money it would still be worth it.

I think it is an 89 or earlier, I have an 89 743 with 2400 hours. These particular models hold there value well with the "oldtimers". In there day they were considered to be one of the best machines available. I have replaced the battery ,fluids and filters in 10 years, that is it. The last three years mine has retired to salt loading only. It gets runs a couple of times during the spring and summer but starts like a top every winter. I think 89 was the last year for the aux. hydraulics on them, they were labelled 743B after that with the aux. I think the price is a little high under the current economic times and used iron market.
PS They were known for cracking the loader arms, check VERY closely and all welds on the arms for cracks. It is hard to find one without welds somewhere on the arms. Mine had been welded up when I bought it. Another good indicator is checking for even side to side bucket edge wear. Tweaked arms will wear the edge uneven.
