Applying compost after slit seeding ok?

Will topdressing after slit seeding bermuda grass cause a problem with germination rates? I've always thought the seed needed to just be under the surface. Would applying the compost before seeding be a better idea, since it would work the compost into the soil better?

Any help would be great.

Are you applying the compost to lift the grade? Are you putting it down to protect the seed?
