View Full Version : $17000 a good trade in value on a 04 f250?

I have a 04 f250 diesel with 61k and really don't need it. I was trying to sell locally but I didn't get any calls. Today I went to a ford dealer and they said they would give me $17,000 for it on trade in for a new 09 f150. Does that sound like a good trade in? I paid seventeen for it so that's what I wanted to get. The guy I bought it from said a different dealer wanted to give him fifteen grand for it when he was looking at 08 tundras they were trying to get rid of.

For a diesel truck in this market and for the fact that you break even with that trade, I would say yeah, it's a good deal.

I thought you recently purchased your first truck, a new Tundra??

Yeah it's great and all but it's too big for me. I need a work/personal truck and the new 09 f150s are what I'm wanting to get. I was going to get one at the end of the year but they're offering me what I paid for the 250 on trade in so its a inticing offer.
The tundra my dad purchased and put his truck in on trade and I was going to pay for the rest of it and we would share it. BAD MISTAKE! He needs his own truck to get to work because the guy that was giving him a ride to work is a jerk so he needs his own vehicle. and for side jobs(plumbing, installs) So a guy bought the tundra from us and gave me his f250 and a lot of cash. I decided I just need a 150 so I put the 250 up for sale just to see if I can sell it and I have had no success the private owner way so this trade in seems good. I wonder why the dealer wants the 250? Are they going to actually make money on it? The guy that bought the tundra was offered fifteen for it.

Forgot to add, I could always snag a older f250 reg cab work truck for like 7 grand or less. It's just this truck I paid 17k for and its not really worth it. I could break even and get a 09 f150 and get really cheap 250 later on. Makes more business sense.

I too thought you just bought a Tundra and I thought it looked pretty nice. Didnt know that you bought a REAL truck,LOL

I dunno what to tell you, you kinda confuse me with all your purchases, trades and things you sell.

GL with whatever you do but getting rid of a truck that holds value better than a gasser and gets equal to better fuel mileage seems like the wrong move to me IMO. But im not in your shoes so I dont know your personal situation.

But to stay relevant, 17 grand is a very good value for that truck.

Why don't you just keep something for a change?

A diesel 3/4 ton...is something to treasure in our line of work.

That 250 you have yourself there would be the LAST thing of yours I would get rid of...I mean that honestly...

Hey...good thing you don't get your trucks lettered or anything.

Oh and trading in that 250 for a 150? Why?

150's aren't half the truck a 250 is...My psd gets 20mpg not loaded.

I hear ya, It's just I would rather get a older less expensive 250 for work and get my money back on the 250 I have and get a brand new truck that can be for personal and work use. The new f150s are made just like the 3/4s

who are you kidding when you say that?...

All I have to say on that statement is...

Untill F-150's have a GVAWR of 9000# and above and 8 LUG NUTS instead of 5 and 6....they aren't half the truck.

I've got both.

It's not cheaper to get a junker that breaks on you in the field while cutting, plus a brand new F150 as opposed to just keeping a truck that could last you years to come...not to mention pull a house down.

mjealey
03-03-2009, 11:01 PM
The 150's are not made just like the 250!!! Sorry, but why would you trade in a 250 just to buy an older, cheaper, less reliable one later. Plus, that brand new 150 is worth $6,000 less the day you drive it off the lot and doesn't hold its value like the diesel does, even though it is a 6.0. Gas mileage is going to be the same in either one. Insurance is going to be cheaper for your 04 also.

Keep the 04 psd that you can use for both personl and work and will hold up better.

Yeah it can pull. I gotta put all the factors together and make sure I don't make a mistake either way.
Question, Once in a while at a stop light I can smell exaust in the cab. Not good?

When I first got my diesel...I thought I smelt all kinds of crap.

Most likely fine.

Get an Oasis report on the truck...It will tell you everything about it. Whether it had warranty issues which are pretty big for that truck...Like the number one problem the EGR valve.

If you need help getting that report...PM me and I will tell you how to get one..its free.

Get one of those reports...and that will tell you if that truck is one of the good 6.0 PSD's...most are.

Oh and by the way...my 04psd gets 20mpg unloaded...and I can go 14 hours plowing straight at over a mile high altitude and only use a half a tank with this truck....can't wait to start pulling my rig here soon with it.

Smellin exhaust in the cab isnt a huge deal. Its probably more likely that you are not used to the smell so you notice it more. Unless its very strong and nauseating, then its fine.

So after all the "MY new truck blah blah blah" it was really your dad's, and from what you said above it sounds like the F250 is his also. You WERE going to pay for part of the Tundra but didn't. It sounds like your dad is the one who is going to get a new F150 because HE doesn't need the diesel.

Oh and yes it is always good deal to be able to trade in something for atleast the same price you paid for it. Where you (I mean your dad) could have got a better deal was to offer the guy what he would have got for trading it in ($15,000), then you would be $2,000 ahead.

That project was put on hold indefinately some time last year. Also, its not the scorpion diesel they were going to put in it, its a smaller diesel. The scorpion is whats going into all the 3/4 ton and up trucks.

yep..that would be insane...a 720lb/ft 390hp 6.7 liter in a f-150.

the scorpion sounds like it will be the most powerful diesel around...I heard there are going to have to redesign the hoods of the 2010 and newer trucks cause the 6.7 is too tall..that's gonna look mean.

I just hope it proves to be reliable other wise ford trucks will be in severe UH OH status.

The front hood and grill is supposed to be about 6 inches taller or so. Fordtrucks.com/forums has pictures of the new trucks!

I don't understand why when you have an 04 Diesel with 61k on it would you want to trade it in for a new truck. That truck isn't even broken in yet. Seems like a waste of money just to say you have an 2009 truck. That $17k trade in value is pretty good though. You could sell it private party for prolly $20-$21k or so. (At least thats going value around philly.)

Sell it outright, yes they show you on paper you are getting $17,000 but in reality you are not. They are just raping you on the new truck. Go in with no trade and you will get a better OTD price than with the trade. Selling outright you may only get $17,000 or less for the truck as well, but you will be paying less for the new truck so it will work in your favor.

I have been getting one, sometimes two new trucks a year for 5 or so years now and I have never traded one in.

This is exactly right. I payed about $13,000 under sticker on the last 1/2 ton truck I bought ('08). If you were to pay the asking price for the new truck the $17000 trade value could, more realistically, be $10000 or even less.

Yeah thats a good deal on trade, but like everybody else has said, you are getting rid of a much more capable truck for, well, a half ton. If you've got a good 6.0, you will be set for a long time with it. And I dont know what you're talking about, chicks dig big diesel trucks, but only if they want a real man, helps you to set yourself apart from the pretty city boys. :weightlifter:
