View Full Version : 23 kaw valves
i have a 23 kawasaki that is having problems re starting when hot. im thinking it needs the valves adjusted. has about 1500hrs on it with never doing a valve job so i assume this is the problem. how many hours should it take for the dealer to adjust. is this something that maybe i could tackel on my own..
thanks

How do you turn the crankshaft to get the pistion at TDC? Can you do this by turning the key for a split second?

No, It's too easy to go past TDC.
Push down on the flywheel grass screen with both hands and it will turn, Or you can put a wrench on the lower crankshaft bolt.
Once you feel it get harder to turn the piston is on the way up for compression stroke. At this point remove the plug and stick a small screwdriver into the hole until you feel it hit the piston.
Now continue to rotate the engine slowly the same direction until the screwdriver is pushed out of the hole. Hold the screwdriver touching the piston and rock the flywheel back and forth and stop when the screwdriver is pushed out as far as it will go.
Now your at TDC compression stroke and ready to adjust valves.
thank you for the write up i think im going to try to tackel it myself next week.

Restrorob.......that allen headed locking screw should be torqued to
61 in-pounds? That seems to be pretty high. Checked my 17hp kaw today and clearance was almost .020" on one and .014" on the other. Not good hope I didn't harm the engine. This engine 5KAXS is burning oil and both plugs were clean as could be:confused: I don't see any leakage underneath or on the top...engine is at 1600 hrs. Anyway thanks for the info you provided for this valve adjustment.
