View Full Version : Is there a way to change the way the pull cord comes out?

I'll try my best to explain this. I've got a Lesco walk behind with a Kawasaki engine. It is not a key start and is one cold natured b****!!! The pull cord comes out of the "cage" facing to the left, which is right at the side of my trailer. When it hasn't been started in a while or is real cold, I usually cannot get it started. The mower isn't used much as it only has 40 hours on it. It starts like a dream any other time. Someone mentioned that my choke might not be operating correct, and I may have it checked out.
My question is there replacement "cages" available that allows the cord to come out in a different direction? I'd like for it to come out facing the controls so I could yank it from behind.
I hope someone can understand my warped description. The part I am talking about is right on top of the motor.
Thanks

take the four boats out that hold it on. and turn it where you want it and the bolt holes line up.

Should have mentioned this, but you cannot do that. The bolts/ holes only line up in one direction. They are not in the same spot. The two on one side are wider apart than the two on the opposite side.

I don't see another recoil assembly clocked in a different position. This may be due to most rope start engines are used on walk behind units, So with the present recoil position the operator's feet are away from the discharge side of the unit.
I agree with checking the choke, All you have to do is remove the air filter then apply the choke and look into the carb to see if the choke butterfly is FULLY closed.

Hmm, I wonder if you can take the recoil assembly off and drill a hole where you want the cord to come out, and put a spacer that is round in the inside so the cord does not rub against the metal hole and get frayed. That might be a possibility??

The hole on the cage should be the same if you turn it 180 degrees. The holes wont line up if you only go 90 degrees but should if you go 180. Hope Im not wasting your time but my fh580 19hp is that way good luck

You can get a starter mount off a new kawi that can be turned 3 different ways. Get model and spec off a new exmark tthp with kawi and order it.

Are you talking about adding a electric starter? Tell me more about how to add this to my Lesco.

I understand your question and I have your answer, Kawi offers a multiple position recoil for the FH451V, 500V, 531V, and 580V
The Recoil or puller start(you cannot use your old one) item# is 49088-7013 and MSRP is $48.81
The multi-position plate is # 13271-70039H and MSRP is $3.94
The bolts(you will need 4) is # 130BA0612 and MSRP is $1.83 each
Good luck I hope this helps....:)

Two things to do right before putting it up for storage, even overnight:
1. Always shut off the fuel supply to the engine, with gaskets in the carburetor start to leaking
what happens is fuel will seep into the engine slowly, flooding it and making it hard to start.
2. Cover that engine with a tarp, some of them, when it rains water gets in it.
These little lessons I had to learn the hard way.

Trying to pull start a walkbehind in an enclosed trailer can be a real pain in the @$$.
We're (Husqvarna) prepairing to realease a line of hydro walks that start from the rear for just that reason.
We fab our own adapter to reposition the recoil.

LOL, what is wrong with the one that Kawasaki offers that looks much cleaner than that thing? I could see if it was an older engine before Kawasaki started offering a multi position setup but on a KAI?
That is about the only thing I like about the Ferris Dual Drives. Engine is on them sideways and the rope comes straight out the back. Great spot to start it from.

Wish we could have used the Kawi option, it just didn't put the rope where we needed it.
