First of all i would like to say thank you to all that have posted prior information about taking the scag trans off. My machine will not stay in gear and it pops out all the time and by reading other comments i figure that it is my shift keys. I want to take this apart and replace them if that is the problem. I was able to get if off the machine and i opened it up. I am trying to figure out how the shift fork comes out so i can get the second gear tower out. I have the first one out but the second one is held in by the shift fork. It has two prongs that go around the shift collar that connects to the shaft. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Mike

Mike,

You have to remove both gear shafts and the fork will drop out, Then take the gears off the shaft first then the shift collar and keys will slide off the shaft. The shift collar groove where the shift fork fingers ride is off centered, Pay CLOSE attention which way it comes off and re-install the same way.

Check the shift key mating surfaces on the inside of each gear as well, They can get rounded and cause jumping. Also, There are washers between each gear. Do not let these get flipped around, They face a certain direction.

Also check the shift detent ball and spring (allen set screw on the back below the shifter).

You can download a complete service manual below;

This doesn't fix the problem but it's not a Scag transmission, it's a Tecumseh peerless :p

Yup, and here's the Official Tecumseh pdf manual for all those peerless trannies:
http://www.smallcarplans.com/manual.pdf

I'd recommend downloading that joker to the computer, case it disappears off
the Web one day.

Peace out
