View Full Version : Overdrive????????

I just bought a 2000 Ford F-250 Super duty Xl reg cab with the Triton 5.4 Litre V8. My problem is figuring when I should have overdrive on and off. I know this is kind of a silly question, but I went from a 91' Sonoma 4.3 manual to this. I pull a 6.5 X 12 landscape trailer with a 36" , 2 21"s and blowers, trimmers, shovels ect................... I always drive in overdrive when not pulling, but when I am, I always finding myself worrying about it switching off and on. Any input would be very helpful, I dont want to burn up the tranny!!

First off don't worry about it so much. When pulling a trailer never have the OD on. When your not pulling you should keep it off if you are going to be travelling at 45-50 MPH and then stopping frequently. If you are going to sustain speeds in excess of 55 for a few miles then keep the OD on.

I agree. I keep it in "3" unless I am going on the highway.
If you leave it in OD, then the torque converter may shift in and out of overdrive many times when hovering around 45 MPH. This will shorten its life.
