Do you guys test the soil yourself? If so what is a good tester? I was looking around and most testers seem to be inexpensive.

With a soil tester, you will get what you pay for. If you want an accurate soil test, take a proper sample and send it to a professional lab. If you just want to measure PH, you will spend at least $100 for a decent electronic, PH tester.

Which ever you decide on, you should take samples/readings from around the whole property. The county extension around here provides the service and has directions for sample collection.
