8.1 is a guzzler I have a 6.0 and that will pull whatever you put behind it or in it. Stay chevy for sure but 6.0 liter or diesel.

its a good motor, but a guzzler...the 6.0 will pull everything that the truck is rated for (and then some, trust me, i know from experience)

Your question is to general for anyone to give you a "ball park" price on what it might be worth. What is it? EC, CC, RC, LB, SB, LT, WT, etc...

A far as what to look out for, my experiences with Chevy's are: Intake gasket leaking, axle seals leaked on all mine that I owned, and the notorious "Pump Rub". I became a victim of it this year when the clock turned 169K. By the time I noticed it, it was to late and it cost me $1500 and was down a truck for 2 days.

If you don't know what pump rub is, Google it and you'll get a few million hits about it.

Over all I have had good luck with Chevy's/GM's.

NADA says AVERAGE Trade In: $6,025, CLEAN Retail: $9,100.

Unless the truck was beat up $5K would be a lowball offer. Buts thats just me. Everyone here who says dont offer much wouldnt be saying that if it was their truck. Yes the big block likes gas, but you dont buy a 3/4 ton truck for its fuel economy. Yes the 6.0 is a good motor too, but the big block has more torque. The Allison tranny is great. I have been looking for that type of truck here but am having no luck.

The 8.1 will give you alot of power. The allision is a great heavy-duty tranny. If your sticking in town and are towing regularly, the 8.1 fuel economy isn't necessarily that much worse than the 6.0.
$7-8000 sounds reasonable to me if its in good condition.

Having a friend who owned a 2001 2500 HD purchased at almost the same time as my 2001 3500 showed that the 6.0 loaded burns as much as my 8.1. And empty he only got at most 4 MPG better. When you load an engine to get torque and HP, both get the same kind of fuel economy. Just the stock 2001 6.0 couldn't match the torque. Period. 6.0 = 300 HP and 360 lbft of torque vs 8.1's 340 HP and 455 lbft of torque. Where most people seem to go wrong is that they compare a 6.0 with a 4.10 axle ratio to a normal 3.73 with the 8.1. Put the 4.10 locker in and then compare and you'll see a big difference in performance.

If i was looking for that truck myself, i would expect to pay around 5k or so. Trucks are cheap around here unless theyre diesel, or a "high end package". My 07 duramax with 40k miles is only worth 15-17k around here. So an 01 gasser with that many miles? yeh $5k max.

Doesn't matter if you use 4wd all the time or never, it will still happen.
