buddy of mine has a steep slope in the front of his house that is currently covered with thick grass and a pain to mow. He usually ends up weed wacking it its just that steep. Anybody have any ideas for landscaping this area in the north east gets sun most of the day????

Try rip rap and naive plants like evergreen to soften the look. If done correctly it can really add some interest.

Some junipers (various sizes and varieties) can add different colors and heights, as well as serve as great erosion control. Like steiner said, add some rock (Boulders or native stones) to also add some interest and further stability. Not sure about your area, but what about some grasses (fountain, miscanthus, or something like that)? You can also add some dwarf trees (crepes, etc.) and some upright conifers-evergreens. There are countless options, but a picture would really help.

Phlox, vinca, myrtle, wilson's ivy come to mind. The ideas posted about junipers are smart too. I have not checked the climate charts for your area, but the turf-type variety of buffalograss would also be a great low maintenance choice.
