late last year we spread topsoil over the clay base that we have. I've put down the lime, fert. etc. then re-seeded. i have beautiful grass finally coming up but some spots where the grass didn't come up so good are now turning green. This is especially true in the backyard where the drain field went and of course where the higher concentration of clay was brought to the surface then used to back fill the trenches. Beside having the soil tested again does anyone have any suggestions as to what's happening and how to fix this problem.

Pics would help?

Also, did you just add topsoil or did you incorporate it with the existing soil?

Post your soil test results as well.

Soon as the rain stops I'll get some pics for you. We just spread a thin layer of a couple inches directly over-top of the mixture of clay that we had to get the seed to sprout. I had tilled thoroughly to a depth of about four inches prior to seeding and spreading the topsoil. I'm sure that some of the areas are on the thin side with topsoil. I haven't as of yet taken another soil sample but will soon to see if what we have been doing has improved our yard. The deer seem to love it as they keep it mowed with the exception of an area of about 30x40 directly in front of the house. That is now about 3 to 4 inches in length, really beautiful to see. Thanks for any and all suggestion that you may have.

Next time you are faced with tilling, determine what is needed to get your soil organic matter up to between 5-10%, and evenly apply compost across the area prior to tilling. If you need to fill in depressions and the such, add topsoil, and once again, before you till.
Basically ... add the amendment before tilling.
