Hey guys, Does anybody here run a hustler Z with the 20hp 749cc Yanmar Diesel engine?

If so, how has it performed? had any engine problems? Are they known as a good engine overall? Any known problems with these models?

Thanks in advance.

It has been a reliable unit for us.
It is a very nice and compact diesel unit.
Most of these were sold outside the U.S., so I am not sure how much reply you will get on this site.

Cant comment on the mower, but I used to have an air compressor with a yanmar, bulletproof. They are quite popular around here for marine engines ( boats)

we had a JD 455 with the 22 hp yanmar and it was a beast, we mowed with it used a two stage snowblower on it. It had 1196 hours when we traded it in and no engine problems at all, however it loved rotella 5w40 synthetic for some reason:confused:

Thanks for the responses guys. I am having some problems with a practically brand new engine here, "3 hrs" hoping Hustler can work with me on it.

Hi Mowerconsultant,

I have a 2007 hustler Z with the yanmar diesel.

The mower was purchased by another person for a big contract that fell through in 07. Mower was in storage for 2 years "unused" before the original owner decided to sell it.

I purchased it and now I seem to have a blown head gasket or cracked head. Radiator water is getting into the oil system, but its not going both ways (no oil in water"

So far Yanmar Australia have been no help to me or the Hustler dealer, they are not returning our calls. The mowing season is nearly over for the year and I am very keen to get some use out of the machine. still dont know if Hustler are going to look after me or not.

Thanks John.

I have a 855 JD with the yanmar 3 cyl diesel. Great engine, almost 2000 hours. Engine never been apart. Great running, and always starts.

John, I find it strange that you cant get a hold of anyone from Hewlett. Theres always someone there unless out on a job. Keep ringing till you get a hold of someone.
Is the machine still under warranty? Get the original owner to take it in!

Last resort would be to take it to a John Deere dealer. They generally know how to work on small Yanmars like on the X595.

Hi again Mowerconsultant,

Greg from Hewletts is helping me out at the moment. I will keep you in the loop with the outcome.

Hi Mickhippy,

Hewletts haven't been the problem, it was Yanmar Australia that were not returning calls, all seems to be progressing now though. Thanks for the advice. I am guessing you are in AUS? What Hustler you running?

Thanks John.

Hi John,

Im on the Gold Coast and deal with Greg at Hewlett all the time, well as little as possible really if you know what I mean! Good guys and easy to work with!

I had a 28/60 Super Z but traded it a few weeks ago on a new 31/60 SZ.

Hi Mick, Checked out the thread, nice machine you have there, and some nice properties to mow, unfortunately we don't get the rain down here and most the lawns are shitty dried out dust bowls.

I am a bit concerned about the power of the Yanmar, I thought it would be sufficient for a 54inch rear discharge but seems like it has half the power of my Walker with a 20.9hp Kubota diesel and 62inch side discharge. Hopefully it will have some more power when the head gasket/head problem is sorted.

John.
