I need to get a trimmer to replace my shindaiwa t230 trimmer that just died out after 8 years of faithful service. The t230 is no longer available here in Canada so my dealer gave me two choices: The Shindaiwa T242 or the Stihl FS110. The stihl is cheaper ($430 vs $460 Canadian), has a larger engine (31 cc vs 23 cc) but is heavier (11. 8 lbs vs 10.5 lbs). Anyone have any experience with either unit? Which would be a better buy? Also, how are both units on fuel? The t230 was excellent.

If i am not mistaken the 242 is an updated 230. I have two 242's and they are a good serviceable unit. I prefer to use my 261, but still use the 242 if someone comes and helps me. Usually my help does not like my heavier 261. IF you are lucky you might still find a 231 around, but im not sure.

I have the 242 and really like it. I have used the 110 from Stihl and it is a very good unit also. I personally like the 242 better. It is lighter, better balanced, and has the Speed-feed head which is great. It has plenty of power and a great overall quality. For a 2-stroke it is quiter compared to others also if that makes a difference. Either units will be good for you, again it comes down to dealers and who is going to stand behind it.

Not quite. I think that you're thinking about the T231, which was basically a catalytic version on the T230. The T242 is all new, and an awesome trimmer.

I have no experience with the 242, but tons with the 110. The 110 is a great machine woth gobs of power. the 4mix design gives lots of torque and it really sips the fuel.

I would say if you are just using a line head that the 90 is all thats needed.

I use a M242 with the trimmer attachment. Same motor as a T242 and runs great plenty of power for most jobs.

If these are the only 2 choices, I would take the fs110. I have a t242, great trimmer, and a 110 kombi also a great product. The fs110 is a little heavier, but well worth it for the extra power it will have.
