Don't go into business without the following-
1 Superior knowledge of the service you plan to sell. Work for another landscaper first, or go to school, or better yet-both.
2 A well thought out business plan. Already covered, press search.
3 The proper equipment. Beg or borrow, don't steal.
4 A back up plan AKA a way out if you fail.
5 Enough money in your savings account to break even or lose money for a while- just in case.
6 Most importantly-CUSTOMERS- Nothing will work without some of these. If you don't know where you are going to get them then you had better figure it out.

The day has 24 hours. If that's not enough use the night.

welcome to lawnsite, in addition to "site"'s advice i reccamend putting flyers up before and during the beginning of the season and whenever else u want, when season starts depends on when the grass starts growing and when landscape work needs to be done, also depends on where u live. best reccamendation is to search search and search some more on this site, the amount of info u will learn is great.

Amen, same here.. never thought it would be so involved. more i learn the more I get pumped to learn some more..

Talk with some of the senior members.. They are very unselfish with knowledge and time for questions (if researched).

Good luck.

Everyone pretty much summed it up. I wouldn't bother with Real Estate Agencies, but that's just going off the experience I've had with them. Good luck with your business.

Beginning of season? That depends on where you are. The name of your town doesn't tell me anything. The types of grass you'll be cutting will also determine when you would start.

Start the flyers yesterday! The more you get out the better. Start walking the streets putting them out. You need to put of thousands if you want to build a good customer base. You'll get junk calls and good calls. Over time, you'll learn to weedout the junk.

Personnally, I would forget real estate agents. Many times the homeowner is responsible for paying the bill. If they have moved 500 miles away you may never get your money.

Company names should give a description of what you do. I don't think "John's lawn service" is a good name. Be more creative.

Call around about General Liability insurance. Don't work without it.

Start reading everything possible from this site. The amount of info here is staggering. You'll learn more from the members here on this site than you thought possible.

Equipment-Go eXmark. (had to throw that in)

Look over the types of properties you will be mowing. You need to find the right size mower for your situation. eXmark makes all types and sizes. :D

Now, hit the search button and start reading!

You are in high school now? or are going into high school? Here are a few courses that I would suggest you take as they will help you out later in life.
1) earth science
2) botany
3) a field science class if offered
4) entomology

also take a few years of basic math, english, business, and computers.
