For a job that size you could probably sub out the hydro seeding part cheaper than renting a machine. If you were in my area I would hydroseed that for $ 400 complete, or less using a top quality seed. I can probably recommend someone in your area if you want to explore that option.

You are welcome Alan. Hopefully he will show today and if not some of the others I gave you are a bit further but the job you have is large enough I would think they would be happy to do it for you.
I have always thought one of the keys to getting business is just to follow up your leads. When I needed some work done on my house I called 6 roofers and only one ever bothered to call me back and come out. His price was nearly twice as high as I expected and I am sure he made a lot of money on the job and that was just because he did what anyone should have done.
Good luck with the job you have Alan. If I can help in any way let me know.

I have a new install job to do and its over 30,000sqf around a pool that was installed last fall. What do you think that job should go for? It needs to have staw netting over the entire area and some grading done. I'm not trying to hijack your thread just trying to figure out this estimate so thought I would post it here. I could never get what your charging for only 4,000sqf.

That is fine. Sometimes talking about something else can be really helpful to people. Actually I quoted that at the high end of my scale because if he did what I suggested I didn't want him to be disappointed with the price he got from someone local and hydroseeding prices can be all over the place. If he was actually in my area and it could result in a job my price would have been less. I did quote a job yesterday that was 2800 square feet at $ 350.00 for a homeowner. I quoted another yesterday that was a bit over an acre for $ 2400 and 400 of that was because there was some rough terrain and steep banks so it would be a lot of work and also because there was a long, windy driveway that I would have to back down and that would be a pain as well.
Usually if I am quoting a price for a landscaper or home builder that can result in repeat business I give them a discount. The bigger the job the less I charge per square foot. I also factor in distance and water availability.
My thought on suggesting he sub it out were basically this. If he rented a machine he is going to pay $ 175.00 to $ 250 for the rental. The materials for that job would run $ 80.00 to as much as $ 125.00 if he does not know where to buy the materials right. So he would have perhaps as much as $ 375.00 in renting the machine, buying the supplies and doing it himself. If he could sub it out for $ 400.00 I am sure his time is worth more than the extra $ 25.00 If he subbed it out the guy is more likely to have a lot more experience hydro seeding which may produce better results as well.
If a landscape contractor really called me for a job like that and if it was a fairly routine job and not real far away I would probably be quoting something more in the $ 300 +/- range.
