I live in the Dallas area and our front lawn is bermuda (gets full sun).

Inside our fence there is a strip of ground that is roughly 5' x 30' that the previous owners had turned into a 'sand box' for their kids :( This area doesn't get as much sun as the front lawn, so not sure if bermuda would grow as well here.

Now I want to lay grass in here and need to know the best way to do this.

--Can I put a layer of soil on top of the sand, then sod?
--Can I put the sod right on the sand?
--Should I stick with bermuda or go with St. Augustine?

Suggestions?

Yes you can sod over sand, actually it would help if you ask me, I would first core aerate the yard and rake the sand into the holes from the plugs.
It depends how much sun you get on the side, Bermuda needs allot of sun, otherwise it will eventually thin out and you will be back to square one.
Same thing with St.Augustine. Emerald Zoysia can take some shade as well as Thermal Blue blue grass.
There are some newer St. Augustine grasses than can take shade, I remember seeing it on a site once, Google Shade loving St. Augustine and see what comes up
