View Full Version : 04' 5.4L Engine 'clatters' when accelerating

Got a question for you guys. I've been noticed the past few days when I accelerate, I hear a 'clatter' as I call it. Just before I pulled into the driveway tonight, it seemed to be louder. Its a Ford F350 with the 5.4. I hear it more from the muffler than anything.

Probably a broke hanger

What is that?

It even makes the sound when I'm sitting still, hit the gas and it clatters..

an exhaust hanger, sometimes the welds break then the muffler or exhaust pipe rattles against the broke hanger

Hm, I look into that, it sounds to consistent for it to be something like that.. its not like it makes the noise when I hit bumps, just when I accelerate, even just a tiny bit

Sounds like the studs in the exhaust manifolds, they rust and break from heat distortion. Mine did it with only 40,000 miles.

It's quite simple.....

They circled the problem on the front of your grill!!

May be an exhaust leak.

Catalytic converter cages/heat-shields can make a bunch of strange sounds (as they slowly fall apart).

I think this is what might be the problem. I was going to look at it today, but things are getting busy awfully quick with this weather! I might just have to bring it in tomorrow..

Thanks for all the tips though!

Funny thing happened today. I was in my driveway and my neighbor stopped. He was driving an expedition with a 5.4 90k not sure what year. His was idleing and it had a clatter. I asked what was wrong with it he told me it was a wrist pin problem. Thats what two dealers told him. They said it was a known problem with the 5.4. Also the coil packs and some spark plugs blowing out of their hole. You migh want to try the dieselstop.com(I realize it's not a diesel) I thought there was a section for the 5.4. Not tying to be gloom a doom. I'm a ford guy. Good luck

Also could be the the stuff in the converter (not sure of the proper term). Little pieces can come apart and rattle around in the converter. I've seen this in several vehicles, mostly G.M. While under idle it just sits on the bottom, until there is enough exhaust pressure to get it moving around.

Crawl under the truck while someone is giving it some throttle, and try to narrow it down.

Hey guys, got my buddy over and we figured out its the right side exhaust manifold.. the part isnt too expensive.. how tough are they to replace? My truck has about 65,000 miles.
