I put in a mulch bid which was going to take a total of 70 yards...Brown dyed mulch...This guy was taking my bid and another bid...The owner told me today that the other guys bid was $1,800 for 70 yards of mulch plus treflan (Preen), instal, clean up, getting there etc...well mine was more than that for sure because my mulch alone was almost that....just wondering by some of you others guys if you think that is right or is this guy going to be making any money or what...just blows my mind...$1,800 for all of that...maybe im just way to high but you have to be able to make money..

cant say about your area, around here mulch runs between 27 to 33 a yard. at 27 a yard thats more than the other guy bid, its hard to say, whats mulch cost in your area?

03-21-2009, 06:56 PM
for me, 70 yards comes up to $1806, thats MY cost and tax included.

I would have to say something is wrong with his figure.

Out of curiosity did you both have the same amount of mulch for this job? Maybe your bid was 70 yds and he was biding way less and was going to try and stretch it.

03-21-2009, 08:20 PM
Yea see the owner said to bid it at 70 yards...and I was getting mine for 28 dollars a yard delivered, another town about 30 miles away was offering 25 a yard but I had to get it, so it was easier to go with the 28 in my town, my town is small by all mean, So I was getting it a 28, so 28 and 70 is $1,960...and then I was adding 10% and my labor for install, clean-up, etc...so something is jacked up...he told me later that well maybe he is just charging 1800 for the mulch but his whole bid said 1800...so who knows..

03-21-2009, 08:20 PM
the mulch alone would cost more than that guys bid here

03-21-2009, 08:46 PM
that is BS if you don't get a minimum of $60 a yard your loosing money IMO. I only do jobs at $90 a yard installed

03-21-2009, 08:50 PM
We charge $80 a yard. Hes probably getting the stuff for free @ the county dump. Free termites too!

03-21-2009, 08:59 PM
I charge $80 per yard up to 25 yds. Then $75 per yard up to 50 yards. Anything above that is $70 per yard. Mulch cost is $20 per yard. So....for $1800.00 he'd get 22.5 yards installed from me.

i did 15 yds and a few hrs shrub removal yesterday$1500 Dont be mad you didnt get it you cant get em all.

That's where my thoughts headed... Maybe he found cheap crappy mulch for free from the county ag barn or the dump after they single shredded some old tree limbs. That's all I can think of. At $1800 for 70 yards installed, if he were to want to even make $10 profit per yard with no expenses or tases taken out he would be looking at only paying $1100 for the mulch which would come out to a hair over $15 paid per yard.

03-21-2009, 09:08 PM
In addition, I think I would ask that guy if he happened to ask for a sample of the mulch that other guy would be using. After seeing what he might be getting for his $1800... he might reconsider. I have had pretty good luck landing mulch jobs in which I was higher in price, but I brought or left samples of the mulches I use when I give the estimate. It helps the prospective client get their head around the quality of the product they will be receiving, because as we all know and very few clients know... there is a wide spectrum when it comes to mulch quality.

Im surprised the customer didn't see any red flags raised after looking at both your bids. In the fact that his was most likely HALF your bid.

03-21-2009, 10:04 PM
Haha yes mine was just over half of what is was...it was about 3800 was mine..and he was like oh man thats 2000 more than the other guy and I was just shocked because we were talking face to face and I didnt know what to say to that..lol, So the only thing I can think of was that the client only got the mulch alone bid for 1800 and not the whole bid of install, treflan, clean up etc...thats the only way..so then i did some math..yes 15 a yard..man where can you find that for good mulch no where around here...so something is fishy...he said he would call the other guy to confirm that was his total amount with instal..etc...so we will see. just blows my mind because I mow, fertilize, fall and spring clean up, snow removal, flowers, I do all this for this guy...almost like his personal landscaper..and then bam this hits and I was surprised..but business i business

Cpro... THAT was your greenlight to call the other guys bluff.... free mulch and or garbage mulch would be the only way he could come up with that bid of 1800... at the very least, it may have opened his eyes to investigate WHY there was such a big different IF and ONLY IF material was relatively the same.

03-21-2009, 10:13 PM
True, at it put me in a wierd position because now I dont want this guy thinking oh wow is this guy over pricing me on everything he does for me which is not the case...i just felt bad because i dont want him to think im taking advantage of him, but im not I had to bid it to make money, so I am so excited to see this outcome.

03-21-2009, 10:15 PM
$80 a yard for mulch LOL you better quit mowing and just mulch. College where in Mo are you

03-21-2009, 10:18 PM

03-21-2009, 10:20 PM
man i get mulch for $14 a yard. anything over 30 yards i sub it out to the mulch blowing companies around here and still make $10-$15 a yard.

03-21-2009, 10:43 PM
Really, $15 that is nuts...is it good quality or?? I mean im sure it is or you wouldnt be using it

you'd be surprised what some crews consider mulch..... the outfit that did all the new construction installs of my community used 'junk' and I mean JUNK.... I wouldn't pay 5.00/yard for it..... lucky if it's shredded, already faded, bug infested, trash all in it.... junk.

Then he had the nerve to come up to my new neighbor and offer him a 3 month 'refresher' load of mulch (3) yards - $500.00

03-21-2009, 10:56 PM
i just did a place last week that took 28 yards and i charged them $1800 plus $550 for spade edging

03-21-2009, 11:03 PM
How much Preen would you need. that alone is costly. Snapshot is $110 for 50lb.

03-21-2009, 11:11 PM
Ya i would not worry about it because this guy is going to lose money on this job if his mulch is of any quality at all. That's rediculous. We charge $65/yd for that big of a job and we buy it for $30/yd. That would be $4550 so this guy is insane charging $1800. I cant wait to see the result of this. Keep us updated

03-22-2009, 03:10 PM
Yea I dont know either thanks for all the replies guys..and ill look into that site you sent me...and ya my bid was 3850, but well see here this week..

That's really low, maybe the other guy will do a crappy job then you'll have to come in and fix it and then charge even more to fix his screw ups lol
