My 25hp kawi is turning slow. Starter is warm and i had to loosen the hydro belt yo get it started. Its not the batter. Even jumping it with a charger on a 60 amp charge wont spin her up. Do starters have a life span? Are there heavier duty ones available. Anything else i should look for? Its on a ferris ztr.

You can make a voltage drop test or take it off and bench test it. They last about 400 hrs. I would imagine it is a Bendix drive style. I would not recommend the made in China replacement being sold by the gypsies online. The OEM is about 180.00. The starter is a pain in the butt to change on a Ferris.

They require maintenance like other components. The bushings need to be greased at certain intervals. If its done early enough in its life it will last a long time. If you wait too long the bushings and shafts wear, brushes and armature burn and the amp draw goes up. It is possible to cheat and not completely disassemble the starter to grease it. It can be off and on in half an hour or less.

Don't screw with it. Lubing will work for a short time. The bushing are self lubricating and when they dry out, the starter needs replacement.

why is it difficult to change on the ferris? Looks not to hard to get to.

On most Ferris's. I don't know what you have. One of the two mount bolts can be difficult at best. Depends on your level of patience

A starter every 400 hours? Just throw them way? Wow. We are saving a ton of money for 20 minutes of service.

We see alot of them fail. But I also see alot of guys drop off machines and sit there on their trailer cranking the starter for 45sec+ straight. Just keep cranking and cranking....its really good for the starter. This is generally on the machine they are not dropping off LOL....YET.

Well the damn kawis have a hard cold start. If your not cranking it it wont start.

Ok, my mower died in a fenced in customers back yard. I picked up the starter last night at the dealer. $187 plus tax. uugg. Anyway you were right. What a pain in the A^$. Had to remove the top of the engine, air cleaner, and even at that it was difficult without removing the flywheel. But i didnt have too. Its done and cranks up like new. The old starter was defenatly burned up. I spoke to my dealer about servicing the starter and he said there is nothing you can do or worth doing. Problem solved. Thanks guys.
