Up for your critique are pictures of the DCV installation at my house.
I'm doing the work in phases so if you don't see a master valve, or anything else for that matter, it's because I haven't installed it yet.

jeez..
Nice that you don't even have to dig!

I've never seen a water meter box like that and I'm surprised it doesn't even have a setter on it. Sometimes we run into double or even triple setters.. It's not fun digging 5-6' for a POC.

But anyways nice job. I'm curious why there is an old gate valve on the domestic side there? is there as pit for that?

ah . I didn't see the second set of pics.
With no blow out be sure to blow out through TC #4 so you don't melt the plastic checks :)

What's a "blow-out"?

Ah, I see.
Yup, there's no freeze line in South Texas. If it's underground here it doesn't freeze.

I didn't install any unions on the DCV. They're not required and if I ever need to replace the DCV it'll give me a good opportunity to install some.

And thanks for the shoe compliment, I figured I'd get as much shoes as I could into the pics!

Trouble is, if you replace the DCVA with another brand, the unions are moot.

Good call, we are coded to provide for 8" of separation plus 18" of gravel.

At least, you're man enough to take the hit from your peers and learn from it; unlike a few on this site.

I'll do the gravel when I have some here, might as well wait until all of the valves are installed. (I knew someone would mention that, along with the unions).
I'm going to try and do the driveway bore next week, if I can find a boring machine or a long pipe and a giant sledgehammer.

I've had many issues with the check valves getting stuck on the other model (we have extremely hard water here). I didn't want to deal with that at my house.

Yup, when they went to smaller top-loading checks, we well folk were screwed. Bring back the 805Y!

Care to share why, in that I prolly had a couple of hundred of them in service and tested them yearly?

Oh that looks yummy. Just made brinner. Breakfast for dinner. French toast and sausage.

I've been eating a TON of fast food. This morning was my last for at least a week. baby steps..... The last year and a half or so, I have eaten more fast food than probably the previous 5-6 combined. Not sure why. Especially breakfast. Carl's Jr's Loaded breakfast burrito is goooood. and close by.

805Y is a flawed designPoppets jam in their guides. I see it frequently in the RPZ version (825Y) when I winterize them.

My son is alergic to wheat/flour. So his was made with gluten free dough.

Other then money and health fast food takes a lot more time then brown bagging it.

I'm in your camp on this. I prefer the DCVAs that can be serviced from the top since ours are always below grade in a box.

Why not use copper instead of sch80?

That's why we used unions, so the 805Y could be roatated for service. I don't like the extra friction loss of the top loaders or the dinky checks.

The 805Y flaws made it a problem when the devices weren't inspected regularly. All I had to do was see one cracked casting (not freeze-related) on an 805Y, and it was off the 'good' list.

We did have a couple of cracked castings, both on premise-isolation units. Out of hundreds, not a bad track record, we did test every year.

Wet_Boots
03-23-2009, 01:15 PM
Yeah, but this 805Y unit never saw any sub-freezing temps, and cracks appearing in indoor plumbing is reason for alarm.

Yup, the cracks we had were very tiny and also inside the building. Freaked me out trying to figure out why they did not test. :dizzy:

Wet_Boots

This crack wasn't tiny, and only some luck kept major flooding from happening. Never installed another one after that.

Wow! Ours were little hairline cracks on the seats; you skated.

Wet_Boots
03-23-2009, 02:28 PM
This was a crack through the threads at one of the caps. How close it was to the cap blowing out, I don't think I want to know. If you have an 805Y in a sensitive location, I'd say you need to dismantle the device on an annual basis, and inspect the poppets and guides.

Mike Leary
03-23-2009, 02:41 PM
Never used to, but towards the end, we did pull the guts. Good to carry some emory cloth, too.

Wet_Boots
03-23-2009, 02:49 PM
And also have a half-inch wire brush made for copper sweat fittings, to ream out the corrosion that could be in the guide. I do this for the 825Y devices I winterize.

Mike Leary
03-23-2009, 03:01 PM
