Thats a really nice setup there! Be proud of it because we all know that little bit of equipment takes a heck of a lot of work. Just keep doing your thing and enjoying it. And by the way thats one money setup, cheap to run but can still make the $. Take care and keep working hard.

Oh and I like the truck, even the mower as well.:cool2:

Edit: You may want to get some new ramps, those arent the safest and thats a nice mower to have slip off. And I would hate to see you get hurt be safe and enjoy.

For what you do you don't wish you had the v-10. 8 mpg is nothing to be excited about. You might not think you've got much, but It's a lot more than my first set up (a push mower in the trunk of a car). I see you have some nice saws there, do you really need those for lawn work??

like I said before I'd rent until you have the money and work to justify a used 12" diesel....and DO NOT buy one with over 800hrs, they take a beating and around 1000hrs stuff starts going thats big $$$ to replace. I saw a dealer selling a brand new morbark 12 with 125hp CAT for $23k!! you can pickup a used one though for around $13k in good condition.

anyway back to what I was going to say, rent one when needed. only $250/day here. what I do it do a ton of tree work and get all my brush in piles, then come back another day and JUST chip all day.

I rented the Vermeer from HD a couple times, it's nice, the bigger stuff I take with me and can sell it as firewood because I have a log splitter.

I rented one form Rental One, never again I will get it from them. It was a Powertek. Engine underpowered, you would have to stop and wait for the engine to pick back up when doing big stuff. And the v's of the trees would tend to get hung, I got so irriated with that sucker pissed me off to no end. vermeer all the way for me.

I'm telling you this, the Powertek is JUNK. Vermeer is the way to go.

Ok, I'll tell you the difference between the 2 that I rented.

1. Vermeer has a bigger engine.
2. Vermeer has a control on it that if you are shoving big stuff through and the engine starts to slow down just a little bit, the feeder will stop on its own and when the engine catches back up it will start again. WHich the mst it will ever stop is for a second or 2.
3. Vermeer has no problem pulling crap in.
4. powertek, crap kept getting hung because I think the feeder gear did not have enough tension, and customers do not want you cussing louder than the chipper running.

Its awesome, and I don't think it is electronically controlled, I wish I knew, I would aplaud the guy who came up with that idea. Do you have an area where you can store branches? Like an open property?

03-26-2009, 11:02 PM
Its called AUTO FEED mudder and EVERY COMMERCIAL chipper has it. With a 12" diesel you wont have problems with the "Y"s, it eats it up. Also as you will soon find out Nick, firewood is a sh1tty business with super low profits. Most guys here buy 18"-22" chippers, chip as much as they can and give the wood away.

Nick, I would suggest you talk to some arborists that deal with trees. A 6" maybe OK, for the landscaper with occassional use but I know and after watching my dad do tree work my whole like (he owned a co for over 20yrs) that a 6" and eventually even a 12" will be too small for you,

Just my .02.....

I know they have an auto feed system, but the design difference of the 2 was one would stop on it's own, the other would not.

If you don't do chiping all the time I would not justify buying one. I would rent one. If you have an area you can take them and store them until you have a huge pile, You could rent it and chip everything up at one time. Instead of taking it to a job and not having a lot to do, take them and build up a pole and do them.

You can always stack the 7 inch above pieces and someone will pick them up for firewood.

I jsut don't see justifying buying or renting a unit for 18-22 inch trees if you don't have a lot of jobs, and the trees/branches are not huge. I can rent the 6 inch for 160 a day, or 238 for a weekend.

What I do, I take them back to my property and unload them in the back, and get a huge pile. I either burn them, or chip.

4.3mudder
03-26-2009, 11:25 PM
It is the design of the hopper and the feeder gear that will pull in a branch with a V. Not just chipping it. It has to get past the gear to start chipping. Ok, I know with a 12 you won't have the problem, but how much trouble is it to cut a v with the saw?

one had auto feed and the other didnt or the other did but it was not on, you can change settings, (rpm speed) at which you want the infeed to stop.

And about the "V"s when you're a tree co. NOT a landscaper it makes a huge difference because you will be running that chipper every day.

I know my stuff bud, dad had a tree co. for 20+ years and I'm friends with a lot of trees guys.....

It sounds like you do, I'm not being a smart ass either about it, but it sounds like you know your stuff. But the problem with that one chipper is that you can be running WOT, and shove somehting big, it will slow down, but the feeder will not stop at all. If I let it keep feeding it will kill the engine. Thats the problem I encountered with this one.

But, the thing is, he is still young, and is not doing much tree work, and starting out with something "small" I think would be a good idea. That is the waying I;m doing it because of costs. I would love to have a 12 chipper, I think everyone would. But if you can do something else with the wood, and keep some extra change in your pocket I'm all for it.

But I agree with you

It sounds like you do, I'm not being a smart ass either about it, but it sounds like you know your stuff. ok, well then like I said before that chipper either DID NOT have auto feed or it was not engaged/activated/turned on.

I think you're think that the hydrolic rollers is auto feed, it is not. auto feed is electrical and the control botton is always near the hour meter....it controls the infeed system, you program at what rpms you want them to stop and it does it automatically.....

like I had also said before if I was him I'd rent until he has enough work to get the 12" diesel.

I thought auto feed was anything that had that gear moving? What is the one that is hydaulicaly driven?

hydraulically driven infeed is standard on all commercial chippers, tell you the truth I'm not sure what they call it....

oh and another thing you want a drum chipper not disc....

I have heard between drum and disk. Drum can keep more coming? Or they keep the momentum going.

The auto feed is electric?

You gonna put a plow on your truck?

I dont know, i have a couple of businesses that i mow and i would get there plowing contract, which would be alot of $$$ but a plow for the truck is alot of $$$ also...

I would not get a salt spreader on it if i do get a plow for it...
