Depends on size and thickness of existing lawn. I have a tractor with all the equipment. Also, have tiller to till under. Aerator to rejuvenate existing turf and not tear the old one out.

Lots of options, just need to evaluate the situation.

Why does he want to rip the old lawn up? There are a few easy steps to follow in order to do a lawn renovation.
1) perform soil test
2) spray whole area to be renovated with glyphosate
3) cut whole area as low as possible (1/2" or so)
4) thatch lawn to pull up junk
5) clean all debris off of area
6) level and grade area
7) aerate
7) thatch again, this time with the blades set so they go into the soil about 1/4 - 1/2"
8) spread seed at recommended rate in a 2 directional pattern
9) spread fert / lime / etc (starter fert is a 1-2-1 or 1-1-1 at 1lb N per M if no soil test is done)
10) apply mulching material to a uniform depth of 1 - 2 inches
11) apply water to 1" deep where soil is soaked, but no puddling occurs
12) water 2 - 3 times per day lightly so as to only keep the soil moist
14) as seedlings start to emerge cut watering in half, and in half again so that you are only watering once a week.
15) when seedlings are around 2" tall make half of your original fert application. This means that if you put down 1lb of N per M apply 1/2 lb of N per M

Those right there are some very generic steps to follow when seeding. Please do not forget that the best time to seed is in the late summer / early fall. By seeding at that time you are able to remove a few steps from the process.

That was so well written I saved it in my "extras service" file.

I can rent a sod cutter from HD for 65.00 a day.

Set it at 2 inches and go to town.
Put down an inch of humus and till it into the bare soil
spread some fert (lightly)
put down your sod
stagger it
rent a lawn roller for about 10.00 a day
roll it
water it
give customer your watering instructions

I charge around 7-8 bucks a yard for everything except for sod removal For that I charge 35.00 an hour.

I hope this helps
