Got into an arguement with a farmer who claims we spray all the wrong stuff at the wrong time for the wrong reasons during the year. For those that spray for bugs, such as grub, sod web worm, cinch bugs etc - when do you guys spray this, what product do you all use and how do ya win an arguement??!! I tried to explain but this guy was he*&bent on not listening!

Tell him if he thinks he know so much he should start his own lawn business.
Or stick to farming.

I know that farmers in my area have less vigorous training than we do in lawncare when it comes to pest control products. I kid you not, I had a farmer tell me one time that the way he knew they had enough chemical added to their mix was to swish it around in their mouth and fine tune it to taste! In the early days a "growers licence" was a simple test with an instructor helping you answer the questions. As technologies and rules changed they were simply "grandfathered" in to the new regulations. I think that younger farmers today are embrassing the new technologies because with the acreage they run mistakes could destroy them. That farmer was likely old school and unfamiliar with the product you were using. There are so many options in the US. controlling pests and the timing can be quite different. You are fortunate because we have very few options here and we are having to rethink the way its always been done.
Yo Guys
I wouldn't be to fast to jump on farmers as being so dumb. There is a total different approach to growing crops than turf. Sure there are stupid farmers just like there are stupid lawn boys. But even small Farming is a multimillion dollar business. If a Farmer is to survive he has got to be competitive. Crops now have DNA that resists certain insects and disease. Pesticide application is done more on a curative than preventive bases because of that DNA.
