View Full Version : Hose reel locked up
Anyone have a clue what's going on? It won't spin freely and when I hit the button to reel it up the motor clicks and appears to torque up, but the reel doesn't move. Can't remember the brand reel but it is on a 2003 lesco space saver 200g sprayer. I unrolled the hose yesterday and went to reel it in and nada so I had to drag 300' back to the truck and toss it in back.

That's a Hannay reel.
Sound's to me like the motor's locked up, and you'll need a new one (unless you're handy enough to break into that one with parts).
Get the #'s off the motor and call Hannay direct, or maybe check with Grainger.
You should easily be able to find a motor replacement cheaper than the $200 or more you're certain to shell out at Lesco-eaten-by-a-Deere.
That's right - Hannay is the manufacturer. I'll check with them directly first.

Something I just thought of....
Carefully pry the reel chain off of the motor spocket, and then press the button on the hose return.
Does that make any difference?
My latest thought... is that maybe there's something wrong with the bearings on either side of the reel itself that could be holding back the motor.

Couple of things to check. First can you turn the reel by hand? or is it frozen? (Bearing problem). BTW there are speciality shops that can change your bearing with special race cutter tools. However the only time I had that happen the shop recommended I throw that reel away and replace it. It had to much rust inside the center pipe.
Can the motor turn the reel with hand Help? (bad motor or solenoid, Maybe corrosion causing resistances on both the wire and Solenoid) I have had Solenoids that click but corrosion resistances limits the Voltage and drives up amps causing the wires to get hot and not turn the motor. Check the negative ground side as well because they get corrosed as well.
Last might be a worn out motor because of poor wiring that isn't giving enough Voltage. As voltage goes down amp go up and cause heat problems. Running Motors on a low charged battery will also cause this.
The reel does not turn by hand except for about 1-2" of travel but it is difficult to move it. When I hit the button, the motor seems to engage and moves the reel that 1" distance then abruptly stops. I made a mistake about the age of the sprayer - this one is only 3 yrs old and still looks new. I'd be surprised if there is corrosion, etc in there.
take the chain off, see if either the reel spins or the motor when you hit the button.

Can you pull hose off the Reel?? sounds like a bearing problem to me. If you are spraying any kind of fertilizer you must realize the Oxidation fertilizer can cause. In my case I broke the reel lose but the bearings were so bad it made it hard to pull hose. Rewind was slow. I ordered another reel from Hanna without the Motor but with a motor set up and saved a little money.

If the Hannay reel spins by itself without the motor & chain attached to it when you hit the rubber button, run for the freakin' hills!
Your spray rig is possessed!! :dizzy:

Geez......No sense of humor, huh?!?
If the rig is possessed I guess I've been spraying ectoplasm on my lawns! Everyone has great advice and I'll let everyone know what I discover after taking it apart.

Good advice, Ric,
Chain could be too tight. Have you ever lubed the chain? Used any WD-40? Ball bearings at each end of the reel could be rusty or damaged.
Use a 12 volt test light. Make sure you have a good ground. The solenoid could be bad. Make sure you have plenty of 12 volt juice at the hot side of the solenoid and...the hot side of the reel motor, (when the button is pushed). Make sure the other side of the motor is a good ground. Reel motor could be bad. Make sure the reel button is good.
