View Full Version : A new guys rant

Interesting to see some reactions to "new guys". I am a "new guy" as well. I got out of the military a year ago. I work a full time job right now and am slowly piecing together my landscaping buisness.
I am not looking to lowball, or step on toes, but eventually look to be competitive. I think when people start to succeed they look to bash the new guy and call them all "fly-by-nighters" or "lowballers". I guess I don't get too worked up because I am looking to be in the buisness a long time, not just make a quick buck.
I am not a fan of busting on entrepenuer stuff because I am willing to bet 95% of the people on this site started the exact same way they are busting on and the other 5% rode in on mommy and daddy's money.
I have learned not to fear competition but to embrace it. If everyone were "pro landscapers" no one would get a job based on service, quality or integrity.
Unfortunately, I can see where it can be easy to lump all new guys in to the same catagory, but there are some out there like myself who strive for the great cut, the hard work and have the willingness to succeed in this buisness. So there is a big part of me that gets flustered when I see those same ads (the lowball ads in the paper), mostly because being a new guy on a smaller budget I have put forth the effort to go to school for landscaping, obtain my license and get insurance.

It's nice to see a refreshing "Welcome to the club" type response. I have been on here quite a bit lately as I get ready to launch. There are alot of great people on here and I hope to continue to learn from them.

A bit about me:

I am thirty years old, married with two boys. (They are my main motivation as I want to be able to give them something better than what I had)
I did 12 years in the Army with three tours to Iraq and now collect disability.
I work at a casino as a dealer, such a kush job making really decent money. However, I am an outside person by nature and am ready to break free the chains of oppression being stuck behind a table (hahaha).
I love to fish and hunt and play poker (I was in the WSOP main event last year) and was even on ESPN when I knocked out Jennifer Tilly. My whole 5 seconds of glory.
I went to school for landscaping at Penn Foster and did lawncare all through highschool.
I love America and still believe in the American Dream and know I will be successful and wish everyone on here continued success.
I am a smartass at heart but extremely loyal.

HERE'S TO A GREAT YEAR!

Best of luck to you. You picked one heck of a year to start out. If you have been here long enough you learn fast who is here to help and who is here to learn and then who is here to make fun of you because you are a threat. I am sure since you are an army man you know what hard work is, and what team work means. I wish you the best of luck this year and hope you do make a buck or two doing it also. I wish i could have gone to the military when i was younger, but i was too stupid and thought it was for chumps..LOL.. Now i take part in project evergreen and do all i can to help those that serve or have served.

I think you said something in this post about lawncare and starting up!---I really didn't see that part however and I apologize!--you lost me with the poker talk, cuz I LOVE Jennifer Tilly!
She is HAWT!!---maybe just cuz she is a damn good poker player and a chick!
I will be there this year, should have been in 08 but family matters didn't allow for the time away.

Good luck to you this year Burgess. This is my 2nd year in business and it looks like it could be a tough year. Doing good work will pay off though and the money will roll in. I'm a Veteran myself, 2001-2006, 1 tour in Mosul, Iraq with the 25th ID.

By the way, saw the clip of you knocking out Tilly at the Main Event. Nice! lol.

Thanks, I work out.

I was in Mosul too. What a dump. I tried to describe to my dad what it smelled like:

Take a bowl, take a fresh steamy dump in that bowl, shave your head into the bowl and ignite. Pretty much summed it up.

lol, referring to knocking her out.

Yeah, good description of the smell. I always wanted to bottle it up and bring it back so everyone could have a whiff.
