You would be better off to send soil sample to Penna State and let them not only test but make recommendations. Check with you local county extension agent for the necessary information.

hey, i believe psu doesnt have the soil test kits at the county sedes anymore, atleast thats how it is down here in delaware county. I believe you go directly to their website now and print out the application. You gather soil tested, make sure its dry and sifted. Then apply about a cup of the soil to a bag and send the sample to psu soil lab here is the site for more information. Make sure you distinguish each bag from the other

You can also use JDL/Lesco, they send them off to CLC Labs in Ohio.

Here is the Penn State Soil Lab's number 814-863-0841
You can order over the phone with a credit card. There are discounted rates if you buy in bulk. Can't remeber how many you have to buy to get the discount though?

I just went yesterday and bought an $11 test kit from lowes. "Soil Master, Soil Testing Kit" You can test 10 times with it and it covers pH, Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium. I took several samples from different parts of the yard and mixed them. Gonna do two different tests, "front yard" and "back yard".
My county extension could have done it for $8 but I like to do things myself. I'm stuck at home for at least a year so I'm doing the yard thing myself, if it doesn't work out then it's time to hire one of you pro's.

Now, send a sample to your extension, and find out just how inaccurate these soil tests kits actually are. Sad, but true....

I just finished using the Mosser Lee test kit. It shows the PH being "happy medium" the nitrogen as low, the phosphorus low and the potassium high.
Whitey, what makes them so inaccurate? Is it the match the color on the chart that makes it inaccurate? Hell, I thought I was getting somewhere learning to test the soil.
What is used to raise the phosphorus level? This is where my ignorance shines LOL
By the way, I gave the bag of Peddington "contractors mix" seed to the neighbor and bought a fresh bag of tall Fescue. 98% seed. :)
