i rented an aerator for a weekend to do a few jobs i had lined up. I test drove this morning on my lawn for about 5 minutes, and it did fine.

So i took it to my first house and started aerating and about 5 minutes into it, it would just randomly shut off. i would turn it back on, aerate for another 15 seconds, then it would shut off again. Sometimes i couldn't get it to start back up, but this went on for about 10 minutes. I checked the plug, gas, choke, gas line shutoff.....nothing was wrong with those.

What could it be?

The engine just dies during use.

Thanks.:waving:

air vent in gas cap could be pluged.try running it with the lid off and see if it still dies

i think he means if you rented it why worry about fixing the damn thing. you should just take it back and they should give you one in working condition. at least that's what i would do.

I'd rather just fix it and finish up the yards i have to aerate, instead of causing a big stink. I agree with you that i should get one in working condition, however they are closed on saturdays and sundays. So i can't just go grab another one. I have to have it back before 9:00 monday morning. I go to school, so i would have to drop it off early in the morning, and the weekend is the best time to rent these things. I have many reasons for just solving the problem.

Thanks

I'm sorry I came off gruff, but my point was that it's not your machine!
I wouldn't touch that machine, if it doesn't work that is the rental place's problem.
If anyone but them fools with it, and something goes wrong they could then say it's all your own dang fault, for instance.
If they're having a bad day they might even charge you for the repair, touch that machine and you've made their problem yours.

The only thing I can think of is, does it got fuel in the tank?
Make sure it's full, since it has to be anyhow, for returning it.

Now supposing it does...
Monday I would take it back first thing, leave a little early so that you have an extra 20 minutes
"chat" time, then when you get there tell them your bad luck story.

Tell them you were unable to use it, you didn't get your own yard done, the thing gave you all kinds of trouble.

Maybe they won't charge you, but just see what they have to say.
That's about all you can do.

Its probably the low oil cut off.

Alright. Thanks for the advice!

I'll see what i can get them to do for me tomorrow, when i take it back.

Thanks again!:usflag::usflag:

You probably should have checked it just because..., but you absolutely should not have needed to nor been expected to. Furthermore, it could be full of oil but have a faulty pressure sensor.

I know the Classen that I have will cut off if it gets low and the machine starts bouncing around or leaning to one side. I actually think I have the oil level higher then it should be to keep it from shutting off.

Oh, and on a rental oil level I think is your responsibility...take it back locked down due to low oil and you will pay.

yeah, cause i would see it shut off more when i was one an incline. Maybe that's what it is...

Needed to run it half choke for about 2 min then take choke off. I had the same thing with my Plugr.

Pretty smart on the rental co. part, rent you a machine that don't run, you feel guilty and fix it for 'em. They get all your rent money, while you fix it, and a FREE repair job! That happened to me ONCE, I called, told them I wasn't transporting it back, they needed to send a tech, and I wasn't paying for down time!! Guy was there in half an hour.
