I have a guy who I cut weekly April through October. He pays me monthly. Anyway, he wants me to put mulch down and trim shrubbery and monkey grass. My question comes in with the pricing. I prefer to use bag mulch for this project as I think it's best for this prop. How do you all price this. If he wants hardwood it will cost me $2.15 a bag plus tax. Do I charge mulch price plus another $2.15 per bag for installation? How would yall do this? Thanks.

I would mark up each bag like 75 cents a bag, then labor on top of that. But, I get it by the yard instead so it is hard for me to say. You can always get it by the yard and mark it up because how often is a homeowner going to go to a place and get that much mulch and plus how much they charge per yard.

Does the mulch come in 2 cu. ft. bags or 3 cu ft. bags. If you are buying 3's then about 9 will make up a yard, 2's you will need 14 to make up a yard. Once you figure that out charge the client 100.00 per yard installed.

double the purchase price and that will cover delivery, installation....bed prep is extra.

Wow. Big differences being suggested here. Some of the difference can be attributed to location. But, wow, some guys don't think their work is worth much!

That's about 56.00 installed. Good luck trying to keep a nice roof over your head with those prices. You could install 10 yards a day and only gross 280.00.

we have always charged mulch plus labor, have gotten real good at pricing this way for customers. i would be curious what the average is of per bag installed as many of you charge. will have to do the math.

why not pick up said amount of mulch shovel it into a container and carry it out. i have done alot of terraed properties where bags would have worked better but the cost is nuts. $3-7 a bag X 9 bags puts you anywhere from 5-20 more per yard in material. if you charge $100 a ard installed you lose big profit right off the top.

that is why labor and mulch are two dif line items, then you avoid the loose your ass prob. we have never said we are over priced at mulchingso it works well

I charge $6.00 per 2 cuft. bag installed ($3.00 cost). It comes out to $40.00 per yard cost and $80.00 per yard installed. My bulk mulch is $25/yd so there is a big difference in cost but I like the convenience of bags. I tend to agree with Big C. and double purchase price. I do that with plants also.

I charge $7.75 per 3 cu.ft. bag of regular hardwood mulch - bought and installed with a 9 bag (1yd) minimum. Each bag costs me $3.21. I try to keep at least 18 bags on hand in case I needs some quickly, but the 9 bag minimum keeps me from having to run to the store to grab just a bag or two that someone wants installed. I know almost anyone can install mulch fairly well, but there is just something about mulch installations that I truly enjoy. If I could just do mulch all day long, every day, I'd probably be a much happier person.

Please tell me where you stated 40 was your purchase price. If you are paying 40 for a yard of malch I would advise you to find a different place to purchase from. You stated double the purchase price for labor and installation. Most contractors pay about 25.00 per yard.

Also most contractors use mulch and not malch.
