View Full Version : Japanese Mini Truck

I have a 96' Japanese Mini truck. Runs great, looks great, and is very nice. Comparable to a Polaris Ranger or Kawasaki Mule. It goes about 55 and gets over 40mpg. People in this area often use them around apartment complexes to move materials/workers around as well as at nurserys. I have used it to haul mulch to parts of properties where wheelbarrows arent an option. It works great. $3,500. The bed will haul about 1 cubic yard, 1500lbs, and has fold down sides.

Is it street legal in Indiana?

04-03-2009, 12:56 AM
I bought it "un registered" and drive it all over Henry county with a farm triangle on it. In Rush county I see them all over on the roads. I have passed many sherriffs and state troopers in mine, and never been stopped. It may be a county by county specific thing. I know people who have them who have plates on theirs, and drive them even on highways. So to answer your question..... yes?

They are not street legal in the U.S. due to emissions.

This is a Federal Department of Transportation decision and cannot be changed on a state to state basis but some states are still allowing them to be tagged. All Japanese mini trucks are restricted to 25MPH to meet off road emissions unless they are >25 years old. You should be able to refurbish an older unit and pass inspection in most states.

dang gubment!

I am not doubting your information, however I do know that they can be registered and licensed. I know this because I have friends who have them, and have titles and license....and they have done this within the past several months. They are titled just like any other car. Once a year they go to the Department of Motor Vehicles, and renew them. Again, not doubting your knowledge but I do know that they are legal, around here anyways. Your state may be different. And as far as trades go, I am up for anything as far as offers go.

And one more thing, as far as being restricted to 25mph, I have never seen one that slow. Mine and all my friends go 50mph +

That must be one of those Kei vehicles. Four dollar gas had me really jonesing for one of those, but they do fall outside of the group of vehicles that have proof of compliance with US regulations. So, your 'mileage' will vary.

I saw a yellow, three wheeled one at the car show yesterday. They are legal in Illinois. It said it gets 40mpg, 55mph, $9,500 new. Never seen one on the road though.
