I have 3 28 efi super Z's and 2 mini z and love them all, great mowers, wouldn't have anything else! Dealer in Elkville great too! But I am having problems with 28 efi motors ,the exhaust manifold pipe and the muffler crystallizing at the connecting point and falling apart and some trouble with charging system not always working right. Does anyone else have these problems and any answers.

If you could e-mail me your information and dealer information I can have someone look into this.

I had to replace the muffler due to it cracking at the bend, at the bottom of the exhaust. Was a pita and an expensive repair!
Just be careful with the exhaust pipe. If you mess up the join you have to take the engine out and replace the entire exhaust system.
I thought about welding but the steel was so brittle it wouldnt work.

There have been others with this problem. Do a search out in the main area.

Thanks for your input. I will do exactly that right now. It's nice to know I am not the only one with this problem, I had it fix once under warrenty on two of my efi's only to have them both go bad after the warranty was gone. Not mad or anything just annoyed a little. Still think hustler the best!!!

Wish I could be at Ralph's open house this weekend, but I cover a different territory now. Ralph and JoAnn are the best. Glad to hear they are taking great care of you. Our TM Larry Lampe will be there this weekend. Make sure to stop and say hi to him. I think you bought my demo Mini Z and demo EFI a few years ago when I was calling on Ralph. In fact, I know I have talked to you, but it was a few years ago. :)

We have 4 kohler efi's 72's and are having a repetitive problem with the cracking at the pipe. The muffler is not thick enough at the pipe. I had addressed this with Hustler at the factory when the tractors were new, but no answer as of yet. The mufflers only crack with the kohler engines and not the kawasaki because we have both models. Any answers?

This problem has been addressed recently.
The new pipes are now stainless at the "Y" where the problem was occurring.
The new mufflers are also stainless where they attach to pipe.
This is not something you can see just by looking at the pipe or muffler, it is welded in and then painted black just like the rest of the exhaust.
The easiest way to check to see if they are the newer ones made of stainless is to use a magnet at the "Y", if its the newer stainless ones the magnet will not stick to the "Y".
Again only the "Y" part of the pipe is stainless along with the same area on the muffler its self.
This is a fairly recent change, not all dealers know about it yet and not all dealer have the new pipe or muffler with the stainless parts welded in.

I recently had to change the manifold and muffler on my 900 hr kohler 27. It's very important to leave the whole assembly loose while installing it. The bolts on the bottom of the muffler should be the last that are torqued down. If people are having repetitive muffler issues, other things that may casue excessive engine vibration should also be addressed... such as deck and hydro idlers... also belt tension.
