Are the compactors from Hrabor Freight any good? Saw in their advertisment the 6.5hp Briggs placte compactor is only $499, plus I have a coupon for 20% off, makes it $399. For $399 it seems like its a great deal, but dont want to buy it if it is a total P.O.S.! If anyone has any good or bad to say about it please let me know. thanks in advance

heres a link to the website, the sales circular has it for $499, website doesnt for some reason.

Everything I have ever bought from Harbor Freight has failed me.
There is a reason it's so damn cheap.

Remember, you get what you pay for.

3000lbs force isn't the greatest...most of the time you get what you pay for...but..I've had a 4.5 in grinder I got for 19$ from them and it lasted 5 years..with some insane use...just figure on replacing any purchase from there a bit sooner than you would a name brand..sometimes you''ll get lucky and sometimes burnt

I know its not the best quaility, but for the price I think its a great deal. Rite now i'm renting them when I get hardacpe work, 320 a week rental fee, so at 399 plus tax if i get 2 weeks out of it im ahead of the game

Get the extended warranty on it. it's worth it.

Why not just buy a good used tamp like a wacker or something for $1,000 and have it for years instead of weeks?????? Quit pussy footin around! Anything worth doing is worth doing right!
Is this how you do hardscapes? Cheap as possible? Come on man :hammerhead:

not at all how I do my hardscapes, but I also dont have an extra 1000 sitting around rite now to spend on a compactor that I dont use everyday. If it was a piece of equipment that I was using everyday or ever week then I would def spend the thousand on a nice used one.

They emailed me one a while back, and then I found one on an advertisment of theirs in Motor Trend magazine

If you join their mailing list you'll start recieving emails with special offers. Every once in a while you get a coupon for 10-20%. The only bad tool I've gotten there so far has been a cordless cut out tool, and that's just a battery problem. Anything bigger I haven't had anny issues. Tools I use on a daily basis, or even weekly, don't come from Harbor Freight.

I have bought a lot of stuff at Harbor and never had a problem. To me its good stuff, cheap LOL

Of course, we are talking angle grinders, hammer drills, safety glasses, and hand tools, never bought a wacker there, however!

A 3000# is fine for final compaction of the pavers, but to me is worthless for base compaction. You simply can't get 98% with a 3000 pounder, IMO. For $400 I'd buy it and use it as a backup at the very least.

I bought one and have used it on a number of projects and so far so good. I also bought the warranty. Like you I got it on sale with a coupon. I was tired of renting.

With that size tamper you will need to tamp at 1-2" lifts which is a waste of time, Harborfreight has a larger tamp for 1200-1300 well worth the money.

well I bought the compactor from Harbor Freight, and its already been returned! No joking it only last 2 hours on the job and the motor died/seized on me. Brought it back and got a full refund no questions asked
