What is the cause of fuel leak in gasket between bowl and body of Mikuni carb on a FD 501 Kawasaki/Deere LX 188?
Is it that my gasket is shot or is a worn float needle the problem?

Probably just a gasket, but take the carb off, remove the bowl, hold it upside down and put a presure tester on the fuel inlet. Presurize it to .8 barr and see if it holds. If it doesnt then you need a new inlet needle. Also remove the float, hold it up to your ear and shake it. If it makes any sloshing noise than you have a sunk float and will need a new one.

Either the gasket is not seated right, or it's no good. Unless the float bowl is loose.

How do I make sure the gasket is seated right?

When you take the float bowl off there is a thin rubber gasket on the Carb. Take it off gently and inspect it for dry rot, cracks, or nicks. If it is OK then put it back on the under side of the Carb, making sure it is not twisted and is up against the shoulder of it's seat. Then install and tighten the float bowl. If it is dry rot, cracked or damaged, you will need a new one, and can probably only get it in a Carb repair kit. If that is the case, you might as well overhaul the Carburetor.
