In my search for my first ZTR, I visited a relatively local dealer. He had one new Mini Z 52in with a 19 kaw motor on it. He told me he would let it go out the door/cash for $5175 because of the change over to the to FT SD. This seemed like an excellent deal considering everything I have read. I just want to make sure that the 19hp kaw will be enough power for 3 residential yards, approx. 5 acres total. Just from what I read, people say that the 19hp is a little small for that mower. Can you give me some input? Also, how would this mower compare to a Scag Freedom Z? Thanks in advance!

I posted in the lawncare forum that I own a 19/52 mini z. I weigh 275 pounds and the mini z has no problem carrying me around the dozen or so properties I mow. Three of my properties are 10 plus acres. The mini z cuts all day long with no problems.

You not comparing equal units, the Mini Z is a pump and wheel motor unit, the Scag Freedom isn't.
For what your explaining here they will both do the job excellent, but your getting more for your money in the Mini Z for sure.

Yesterday I got to pick up my brand new Yellow Mini Z!!! Yahoo!! Now I want to tell you about the conversation I had with my 80 year old father. It went something like this..... By the way my dad calls me skeet, short for skeeter (36 years old and my dad still calls me skeeter HAHA! God I love that man!)

Me- Hey daddy!
Dad- Hey skeet!.....(he then spots the mower) Skeet! What have you done bought?!
Me- I told you you I was gonna buy a new zero turn mower. It's a Hustler Mini Z.
----- My dad is either on crutches or in a powered chair most of the time--- Today he wasn't so he limped over to the mower.
Dad- That there's one fine lawnmower!
------ He then began to do the once over, then the twice over, then the thrice over... It was hilarious...
Dad-This thang looks pretty simple to work on. Man that thang is heavy built. I like them there big tires. Yep, got a Kawasaki motor on there. You can't go wrong with Kawasaki. You know skeet, if you take care of this machine it will last you a long time.
Me-Yes sir
Dad-(now the question I was waiting on) How much did this thang cost, bout $3000?
Me-Well daddy..... a little more than that, but I got an excellent deal. It's a commercial mower instead of a residential mower.
Dad-Well I went to Lowes yesterday and they had a John Deere zero turn for about $3500.
Me-Dad that's a residential mower
Dad-Nope, them John Deere's are commercial.
Me-OK
-------- I have learned through the years just agree.. hahaha!

Dad-I bet that thang drives good---(that was a hint)
Me-Hold on and I will get it off the trailer so you can play.

------I pulled it off the trailer and told him to get on it. He spun circles in the front yard, it was hilarious. My mom started fussing at him about messing HER yard up which made it even funnier... He then said---

Dad-How you let this here deck down? (remember I have not even gotten this mower home and cut with it myself)
------ I showed him and he took off cutting his grass in the rear yard. I finally got him to stop and he let me cut his front yard and sides. We talked a little while longer about how he liked it and I said well I will cut the lower yard for you. I cut about 3 circles and I saw my dad sitting on the trailer watching me. I motioned for him to come down to the lower yard and finish. He limped down, got on the mower and begin cutting. I kinda thought he was finished after he finished the lower yard...... Nope... To the barn he went to cut the grass down there. I ended up leaving the mower with him and he drove it to my house later cutting both sides of my driveway. ( I only live half a mile from my parents.)

Once he got it to my house we cleaned it up and he did the once, twice over again and said, "that there's one fine mower! It shore does cut good and man that thang is fast. You can cut all your property and a couple hours compared to a couple days like before. That shore is fine lawnmower." I told him to come get it anytime he wants it and cut his grass. He probably won't, he's just that type (extremely prideful). You never know, he may buy one! haha!

Even though I didn't get to cut much with the mower I can tell you that it is the nicest I have ever used. It made a great memory of my dad and made for a funny story today at school. My 6th graders love my stories and so do my other team teachers.

I am also looking at the Mini Z 52'' with the 19 HP Kawasaki. A local dealer in the Richmond area gave me a price of $6,500. Looks like you got a great deal. What are you referring to in regards to the change over to the FT SD?

Apparently their coming out with a new Mini Z and the FT HD is very similar to the old Mini Z and less money. I may be wrong.

The FasTrak SD is not the replacement for the Mini Z.
We stopped making the current version of the Mini Z so we could do some design updating, it was the oldest design in our line up.
The new version will be called the Z4 and will hopefully be available in June.
I will be posting models and information on this next week.

I had an older Mini Z that got a lot of deck build up.

Have there been any deck changes? I saw a 2008 for sale and thought I might add it to run along with my super z 66

The discharge opening and blades changed in mid 2005 on the Mini Z / Super Mini Z deck.
