I need a little help with my old toro 21" with the Suzuki 2-stroke. The thing will run great for about 15 min. and then it will just quit. It will restart but it must cool off for a half hour of so. I have changed the plug but it still dies. Could this be vapor lock? I did a search but couldnt come up with the same symptoms. I do keep my fuel at 50:1. My primer bulb has started to crack and you can hear it knock for a country mile but I love this mower when it runs. Thanks for your input.

A cracked primer bulb will make starting difficult. I have one of these, about eight years old now. Last Summer, I had trouble starting and learned that the primer bulb was cracked. The priming task was not effective, making the engine nearly impossible to start. A new primer bulb was an easy fix.
"... hear it knock for country mile ..." does not speak well of the health of this engine. If the knock is distinct, I would believe that there is something terribly wrong internally, and the continued life of the engine is not very long.
The engine stopping after 15 minutes may be a sign of an ignition module going bad. When it gets hot, the module stops working, but resumes working when it cools. That is just a guess. There are some threads in this section that discusses testing of modules to learn viability of the unit.

What model#? I've run one of my 22040's for extended time without the primer bulb. (choke worked just as well) I've since then replaced the bulb. I doubt its the primer.
Does your Suzuki have points? Some of the older Suzuki engines had points ignition. Could be that.
But it could also be the electronic ignition is going to heck. (if it has it)
I had one do this. (expensive fix) I had to replace both the ignition module and the flywheel because they changed the ignition packs somewhere through the years and required a different flywheel to use the new ignition module.:dizzy:
As for vapor lock?? I thought that was something that only happened to old Fords:rolleyes:

Thanks guys, I have not been under the flywheel to check for points or an ignition module but now I know where to start. I think it is a 1999 model but it is the model that you referenced in the reply. Thanks for the quick reply and your ideas. Ill let you know what I run into under the flywheel.

Wait, if its a 1999 model year it won't have points. No need to be taking the flywheel off then.

Did you put exactly the same plug in ? was it knocking BEFORE you changed plugs ?

I did not put the same plug in; however, it knocked with the old plug too just not quite as bad. Knock can vary depending on the load put on the engine (tall, thick grass) makes it worse.
Thanks!

OK, I was thinking that possibly the piston is hitting the spark plug, now since it's not the same plug as the first, are you sure the first one is the right one. If you put in a plug that screws too deep into the cylinder, the piston will hit it. If this is not the case, you have a possible connecting rod problem.

I will go with the NGK to see if that helps..thanks!

I'm no expert by any means but I run these Toro mowers all summer and I have a Toro 22040 with a knocking sound that took me months to figure out because the engine seemed to run great as usual.
What I found was that the blade adapter thing was hitting the side of the lower "plate" I call it that covers the belt pulley and bely enclosing it.
I figure its probably a bearing with some slight play causing it but I'm gonna use it till she has so much play she's toast. If you had an incredible amount of hours on you, you'd knock alittle too!!
Anyway, here are a few shots of what I'm talking about.....I had one of my 22040's on the bench handy anyway.
The first pic is the cover, the second is the adapter thats hitting the plate in the third picture. (see the rub marks?)
Hope this helps with the knock anyway. As for the die situation....??? I'm not much help there.

thank for the pics. I will check to see if thats where the knocking is from. It sounds like it is something inside the engine but I will check under the blade. It could also be described as a rattle like it is has something loose inside. I have walked around it with a wrench thinking I might find something loose but no luck yet lol.. Thanks again for the pics.

Sounds just like the mystery rattle I had. It won't go away if its what I described earlier.
Good luck.

you gotta love the old suzuki's. Just keep running it. :) I have one my dad ran over in 99, put it on a new deck, new gas tank, fired right up. Best engine on a push mower ever.

Think it might be a fuel starvation situation? I had some old toros that would get a tiny fragment of grass clippings in the tank somehow and it would work its way down and clog up the carb. No idea if these commercial units have fuel filters but after I added fuel filters I didn't have that problem again. Before, they would run a little then die and you could keep it going by choking it some.

Sorry for the late reply, been chasin mowers:walking:. Think it is a fuel problem Brucec32 because I took the plug out right when it quit and it still had fire. I just need to pull the carb and clean it good. Noticed when I pulled the airbox off to install a new primer bulb that the carb is dirty. Was out amongst my yards when I had it apart so I did not clean it properly. Ill let you know when I get the carb cleaned if it keeps giving me trouble. As for the knock, it is down to a quiet rattle after the new plug. Strange because I cange plugs fairly regular. I only use this mower in the back of eight yards so once the season started its been "just keep it running until I get through these yards" then "well I can fix it later". Thanks.
