You will get alot better answers if you display your location. In warm season turf, metsulfuron is excellent.
If you spray onions this late in the year, you can count on seeing them again next winter. In the South, herbicide applications for onions are much more effective in Nov. and Dec. The University of Georgia did some studies on timing and 2,4-D for onion control. Late season apps gave about 40% control.
For small areas, a cotton glove soaked in 2-4,D is a guaranteed way of killing every onion that gets touched.
Use plenty of surfactant. I am sure Speedzone or similar works great also and might be your best bet if you are up north.
