I've been looking at Fords but this came up locally and my Durango just lost its transmission and since i can't take the baby in either of my dumps I am forced to probably bite the bullet and buy something this week. This fits my profile at trucks I've been looking at in the price range and mileage, I am going to call in a little bit to see if its a 6.0 or 8.1(def. not looking to get one of these). This will be a work truck and my daily driver. Thanks.

Not a bad truck but it obviously won't be the best on mpg's either. What about getting the tranny re-built or replaced in the durango?

The durango has 187,000 miles on it. I also need about $1000.00 of other work in it to get it right, and can't see dumping that much into it with a rebuilt transmission(probably 2500-3000) on something that old. The durango has a 5.9 l so I only get about 13 mpg as it is without the benefit of having a truck bed. I am torn between a half ton or bigger. I have a dump trailer I don't use anymore since i have a two dump trucks. But I keep it so that eventually when I get a skid steer it will go in that and I want to be able to pull it. I am also looking at 2wd since I'm not gonna plow and that will help the gas mileage out.

You could get a brand new chevy 1500 for that price.

That looks like a nice truck. I have an 04' 2500 crew cab with the 6.0 and it has power to spare. I would not get the 8.1 unless you are pulling a really large trailer. Yes you could get a 1500 for about that same price but I dont think it would be a well equipt truck but the finance rates would be right and you would have a warrenty. A heavier truck may be the way to go if you plan on heavy loads or heavy towing. A 3500 long box may be bigger than you want for a daily driver.

What do you get for mileage with the 6.0? I need a quad cab. Would a 1500 be ok for occasionally towing a skid steer in a dump trailer?

The 6.0 is not that great on gas but better than the 8.1 by far. On the highway I get 13-14mpg and city 8-9mpg. The truck averager says 10.5..... I think a 1500 would be enough as they have plenty of power too. I may be wrong but I think the 5.4 in a 1500 has about 320 h.p. and my 6.0 has 300 h.p.

My father in law just got a 09' crew cab 1/2 ton and it is nice.

I'd pass, unless you really want that particular truck. You can find a Duramax for that price and it'll give you better all around performance and mileage.

Price is way to high. I've seen diesels with just barely more miles and newer for less.

Found out its a 8.1 not even going to look at it. This looks promising as well.http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?ct=u&car_id=257944812&dealer_id=75313&car_year=2006&rdm=1240359868826&num_records=25&model=F250&make3=&systime=&make2=FORD&highlightFirstMakeModel=&start_year=1981&engine=&keywordsrep=&keywordsrep=&keywordsfyc=&keywordsfyc=&certified=&body_code=0&fuel=Diesel&awsp=false&search_type=used&distance=500&marketZipError=false&model2=F350&search_lang=en&showZipError=n&make=FORD&color=&keywords_display=&page_location=findacar%3A%3Aispsearchform&min_price=&drive=4+wheel+drive&default_sort=priceDESC&seller_type=b&max_mileage=30000&style_flag=1&sort_type=priceDESC&address=08758&advanced=y&only_photo=1&end_year=2010&transmission=&doors=Four+Door&max_price=25000&cardist=75&standard=false

Your be better off with the 9 mpg 8.1 in the Chevy rather than that hand grenade, at least the gasser would be reliable.

Well guys find me a duramax only a couple years old and about 30,000 or less for about 21-25,000 and I'm on it. I always hear people seeing these great low prices but up here in NJ these "deals" are hard to find.

Yep- you can get a Dmax for that price. How about an older, simpler 4x4 Chevy with the 6L gas for around $14k?

Or, put out 1200 into the Durango for now and find the truck you really want, remember $1200 is a lot cheaper than 22,000 and at least it won't be a quick buy then.

That gas truck isn't worth more than 16k. It;s nice, but just tough to move right now.

The durango is gonna take about $3000-$3500 to get going. Thanks for those truck search but I want to only spend about $21-$25 the 30k was the miles I should have been more specific. I have done alot of searches on this site and came to the conclusion that a duramax with allison trans is probably the best choice, but I would probably also go for a low mileage newer 5.4 ford. Well I will keep searching.

I'm going to look at the ford its almost 2 hours away. Any thing special I should look for? I know i will ask for an oasis report I think this will tell me if there were any engine problems right? It still has a warranty it is listed pretty cheaply though I haven't figured out what the catch/problem is yet.

Being an XL with power nothing hurts the value, and being a 4 door longbed doesn't help it either. If it was an XLT 4 door short bed, it'd probably already be gone at that price. I wouldn't be scared of an 06 6.0, I've had 7.3's and am kind of starting to look at 05 and up 6.0's for my next truck. A year ago, before the diesel truck market ate $hit, I bought my 01 F250 4 door short bed lariat 4x4 7.3 with 99k miles for $17k, so in theory thats not too bad of a deal in my book. I personally would rather have just about any other cab configuration than that, but thats just me. Good luck in the search.

Just get an oasis. That will tell you everything you need to know. Its so cheap because of the XL model. Which is of course perfect for a work truck. Theyre just trying to get the truck off their lot. Crew cab long bed is the only way to go!

Thanks guys I still haven't got a chance to go up there(I have been renting a car in the meantime which is killing me but work is busy so that's good) but I really really appreciate the info. I would rather have a short bed but its pretty low on my wish list.

Going today to check out a 2006 chevy silverado 2500 ext cab duramax diesel/allison trans 4x4 with 56000 miles for $20500. No warranty though. I also found a 2004 ford f250 5.4 crew cab long bed with 18000 miles for 17k. Its a drive but they are supposed to send more pics to me of the inside. Both seem like great deals. Only reason I'd like the ford is I really want a crew cab.

I would rather have a short bed but its pretty low on my wish list.

for a truck that you're going to be working out of get a long bed. my first truck ever was a CCLB (crew cab long bed)...at the time i hated it b/c it was so big...then i got the truck listed for sale below, and loved the truck, but couldnt stand the short bed...ended up w/ a CCLB again...cant beat em
