I'm sorry but I don't have a pic of this weed, but it is taking over my yard. I will try to discribe what it looks like.

First of all I live in the Dallas area (Midlothian to be exact). My yard is bramuda grass and my soil is clay. The weed in question is a very dark green and has very thin leaves (about .2 inches across). It's leaves are packed tightly together (a ton of leaves in a small area). It grows in small round tufts about 6 to 10 inches across. There are no stalks with seed pods growing out of the top of it (this may be decause I cut my lawn so often that it doesn't have time to grow them). Every year this weed comes out before the Bramuda does (about 3 weeks prior to the bramuda turming green) and dominates my yard untill mid summer when the bramuda gets real thick and catches up to it and chokes it out.

Dallisgrass was my first thought, but all the pics I see online of Dallisgrass show wider leaves and stalks coming out of the weed that have seed pods on them.

Is this enough info to make an educated guess as to what this weed could be? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds familiar because I've had something similar, however let grow and get seeds at top which when touched will jump off the weed like dam popcorn.

Without pics its hard to say but sounds like chickweed, I've had the same issue.

Yep, I've had that too and makes more sence now why you see it in the spring and the Bramuda eventually smothers it out later.

Thats perenial rye-grass but I would expect to see some seed in it also even if you keep it cut short?

See the third pic down here in the 4th post.

Well then, perenial ryegrass sucks!!

This stuff has dominated my lawn for years. How do I get rid of it in a bramuda lawn

Not sure, when it starts getting hot it will die out but in your situation will be even harder due to the bramuda grass.

I'd say try Specticide weed stop which is what I did in that thread I posted above, however using weed stop on bramuda will turn it yellow much like it did my perenial ryegrass, it turned it yellow but it has recovered now but I did get rid of the other weeds I wanted too which was worth the one week yellowing of the lawn.

Kirk1701,
That first weed you were describing is hairy bittercress, and it is a funny yet prolific seeding weed. This little booger is known to throw seeds up to 5 feet across when activated by the wind or animal touch.

MikeCox,
Does that weed resemble Poa Annua (Annual Bluegrass)....the reason is that it looks like it from the picture. The best way to tell is when it flowers with the white cluster on top and yet they produce 1,000's of seeds per clump.

As for it flowering, in teh years that I lived at this house this plant has never flowered, although that may be because I cut my grass so frequently. Maybe this can help someone diagnose what kind of plant I am dealing with. When I pulled a clump of it up last night some of the stalks of the plant right at the soil level were bright purple. What kind of grass/weed has leaves that are purple at the bottom?
