Organic Topdressing

Is there a way to add organic material such as compost to a lawn without choking out the grass already there? I have a lawn I'm trying to bring back and it could use some organic material in the soil.

The simplest method is to fill a wheelbarrow and have a friend push it about the yard while you empty it with your hand. Constant fanning motion spreading it about 5' to 7' wide swaths. Should be able to do a pickup load in less than an hour that way.
