View Full Version : How fast can you wear out the blade?

On your stick edger how fast do you go through a blade. I already went through a blade on my Stihl FC-75 and I just got it like 3 weeks ago. I think it may be because I've been doing so many new edges lately, is there something I'm doing wrong?

Depends on the amount of lawns, it'd be best to have an hour meter to judge, I probably go through mine at about that rate.

Lately I've been using it several times daily. Is it even possible to have an hour meter on a stick edger? I keep spare blades on the truck too so that will help out.

All depends on volume.
I average only one week per blade.

Yeah I got so tired of it I just ordered like IDK how many so long ago...
100, 200, 250, 500?
I don't remember but I said gimme the whole dang box and I don't run out no more,
now I don't care whether a blade lasts me all day or 5 minutes LOL

1 blade in three weeks? My edger go through more than that just sitting on the trailer! We would use one a day, maybe more if we did some larger places like commercial. Also, keep in mind, when you are doing the initial edges of the season, you are going to go through more. This is especially true of places that haven't been edged in awhile (which is another reason why I don't like to use stick edgers for initial edgings).

I usually go through at least 1 a day this time of year. New ones make alot better edge than a used up worn out one

I've never checked the numbers on edger blades but if I had to guess I'd have to say about every 40 or 50 uses with a use being I used the edger at one property.

About one blade per week here also, we edge lots of roads and curbs too.

I don't let them get ground down too short, a good blade does a much better/faster job.

It's also a good practice to grease the gearhead when you change the blade.

Yeah, I second the idea for an hour meter on a stick edger...that way ya know when to change oil.

I buy them 50 at a time and go through about one a week.
I think the depth you cut has a lot to do with it also.

two or three a day here...during cleanups

during the normal summer about every two weeks.

I could wear mine down more but i don't like the gearbox and guard rubbing against the ground.

I am also at one per day. I cannot imagine going more than that, after a full day, theres almost nothing left. I do use it on every property throughout the day though.

I buy boxes of 50 also. The heat treated blades last longer (non heat treated are a waste of time. I once bought 5, and threw 4 away). We change them often, a new blade is faster and does a better job. Paying a worker to diddle with a short blade, is more expensive than a handful of new blades.

We can wear out Edger blades (star blades) in 7 hours on large apartment complex's. Stock Stihl blades last one row of apartments or 95 units, or in time, 4 hours

About 1 a day

It's also a good practice to grease the gearhead when you change the blade.

That may not be such a good idea. Unless you see the grease coming out somewhere it usually pushes up inside the driveshaft tube. You can get enough grease in there to where it affects the edgers performance. Usually a once a year greasing is more than sufficient.

Does anyone know if this will fit the FC75 by Stihl. I think it will but I don't want to order them and not have them fit.

just bought some edger blades Oregon Star blades their $10.95 each now locally at that price 6 blades would be $60-$70 dollars. I am going to start ordering my edger blades the local dealers are raising their price's while the lowballers drop theirs

Buy blades from your manufacturer. Aftermarkets use cheap steel and don't last for the dollar

I get my blades through landscaperpro.com. I much prefer the sharpened kind, they cut cleaner and easier. They don't cost but 15 or 20 cents more than the standard ones. I buy 50 at a time because that's the price break for the quantity discount. 50 will last me a couple seasons. I go through about a blade a week with my normal weekly lawns. I'm doing 80+ lawns a week though. Not all see the edger though, and many don't have anything more than just the 2 sides of the driveway to be edged too.

I'm using the 40-139 on my Stihl FC75.

Just ordered 35 of them. Also a new PTO switch for my Husqvarna. The one on my Gravely quit so I stole the one from the Husky lol
