View Full Version : 07 Scag Turf Tiger 29 hp Kawi not charging

I have an 07 Scag Turf Tiger 29 hp dfi Kawasaki that is not charging the battery. I can charge the battery with a charger and run for an hour or so before the engine dies. I cleaned the battery terminals and have checked all of the connections I can find, but the charging system on the mower still doesn't charge the battery. The amp gauge shows discharge with the mower engaged. Anybody familiar with the Kawasaki charging systems that can help me troubleshoot without just throwing parts at it? I suspect a bad voltage regulator, but I don't want to overlook a blown fuse or something like that I'm unaware of.

Definatly check you fuses first. Then check output at alternator, and trace back to the battery.

It was the 20 amp fuse left of the seat that turned out to be blown. All is well now! Thanks

Where is the alternator on this engine?

for years now, scag has been know to have fuses heating up and blowing or melting from arcing in those fuse holders. Go and get some heavy duty universal blade type fuse holders (auto store or rotary sells a good one, #9931) and cut the scag ones out and wire the news one. This has fixed more scags since the tiger ztr was introduced than i can count. after doing that let the unit run for a while and feel the fuses/wires. If there cool your good, if they are still getting hot, something is causing resistance and the heat. Could be as simple as a damaged battery. We have seen a ton of batteries lately test fine (load test,etc) but still be the cause of excessive amp draws and resistance, specially ones that have been run down or dead. If thats not it, then its time to get in deeper and start checking connections, etc.

Get the water proof fuse holders with the caps. I never had a issue with mine until after a rain. It arc's with the water getting in the holder.

I have this same problem I need to look into on one of our scag riders. Is the charging system similar to a cars, that it should be outputting about 14.4v to the batter while running, or how else do I check?

It's been reported that it will need jumped, sometimes, but after a charge will start quite a few times. It will also bog down when blades are engaged. I'm gonna check the battery, then the fuse, and wiring first. If that's not it I guess the voltage regulator is next, and then the coil?
